Job summary

Novatrials in Newcastle is seeking a Casual Laboratory Technician to assist with processing, handling, storage and shipment of biological specimens collected during clinical research studies. You will work within our Clinical Trials Unit in Charlestown, ensuring accuracy and compliance with study protocols and regulatory requirements.

Your role includes preparing specimens, maintaining records, supporting investigators, and adhering to biosafety and quality guidelines.

Qualifications

• Experience in a clinical or diagnostic laboratory environment.
• Experience handling biological specimens and maintaining accurate laboratory records.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to specimen integrity.
• Good organisational, documentation and data-entry skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic recordkeeping systems.
• Current Good Clinical Practice training, or willingness to obtain it.

Responsibilities

• Receiving, processing, centrifuging, aliquoting, labelling and storing clinical trial specimens.
• Performing routine laboratory procedures and point-of-care testing as required.
• Maintaining accurate sample-tracking and chain-of-custody records.
• Preparing and packaging specimens for shipment to central laboratories and research partners.
• Monitoring specimen, reagent and equipment storage conditions.
• Completing equipment checks, calibrations and routine maintenance.
• Maintaining laboratory source documents and study records.
• Supporting investigators, research nurses and study coordinators with protocol-specific laboratory activities.
• Following biosafety, infection-control, quality and workplace health and safety requirements.
• Promptly reporting deviations, incidents and quality concerns.
• Assisting with site initiation visits, monitoring visits, audits and inspections.
