About The Role

The Business Development Manager is responsible for driving the growth of Cann’s contract manufacturing (CMO) and white-label business within the Australian medicinal cannabis industry.

This is a highly autonomous commercial role responsible for identifying, developing and converting new business opportunities, while also owning the ongoing commercial relationship with Cann’s CMO and white-label customers.

The role will develop and execute business development activities across the end-to-end commercial lifecycle, from market identification and prospecting through to opportunity qualification, proposal development, commercial negotiation, contracting and customer onboarding. Working closely with Operations, Quality, Regulatory and other internal stakeholders, the Business Development Manager will understand customer requirements, assess manufacturing feasibility and develop commercially viable solutions that can be delivered within Cann’s operational, quality, regulatory and commercial framework.

The role requires a consultative and relationship-led approach, strong commercial judgement and the ability to engage credibly with senior stakeholders across customer organisations and internal technical and operational functions.

  • Develop and execute the business development strategy to grow Cann’s CMO and white-label customer base, aligned with the broader commercial strategy and business objectives.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of the Australian medicinal cannabis CMO and white-label market, including customer needs, industry developments and competitive activity.
  • Identify, source, qualify and prioritise new contract manufacturing and white-label opportunities within the Australian medicinal cannabis industry.
  • Develop and maintain a strong network of prospective customers, industry contacts, referral partners and relevant stakeholders to support new business development.
  • Build trusted relationships with prospective medicinal cannabis companies, brand owners and other relevant customers to develop and convert new business opportunities.
  • Own the end-to-end business development process from market identification and prospecting through to opportunity qualification, proposal, negotiation and conversion.
  • Develop a strong understanding of customer needs, product requirements, and commercial drivers to identify and develop viable business opportunities.
  • Develop commercially compelling proposals encompassing pricing, volumes, manufacturing requirements, supply arrangements and other relevant commercial considerations.
  • Partner with Operations, Quality, Regulatory and other internal stakeholders to assess customer requirements and ensure proposed solutions are commercially viable, operationally achievable and aligned with applicable quality and regulatory requirements.
  • Work closely with Operations to understand manufacturing capability, capacity, lead times, production requirements and operational constraints.
  • Lead commercial negotiations with prospective customers within agreed commercial parameters and delegated authority.
  • Ensure commercial agreements are appropriately progressed, approved and executed in accordance with Cann’s processes and governance requirements.
  • Lead the commercial onboarding of new manufacturing customers, working with internal teams to facilitate a smooth transition from commercial agreement into operational delivery.
  • Own the commercial relationship with CMO and white-label customers following conversion, building strong, long-term partnerships and identifying opportunities for account growth.
  • Maintain accurate pipeline forecasts and provide regular reporting on opportunity status, expected conversion, risks and key commercial developments.
  • Monitor emerging trends, market opportunities and changes in customer demand to identify potential areas for business growth.
  • Provide relevant market intelligence, customer insights and commercial recommendations to senior management to support business and commercial strategy.
  • Represent Cann at relevant customer meetings, industry events and forums to strengthen market presence and identify new commercial opportunities.
Qualifications / Licences
  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Business, Commerce, Marketing, Life Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant commercial experience.
  • Pre-employment Security and Health Screening.
  • Driving License.
Experience
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in business development, commercial management, strategic sales or a similar customer-facing commercial role.
  • Experience working in contract manufacturing, CMO/CDMO, pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, complementary medicine or another GMP-regulated manufacturing environment.
  • Direct medicinal cannabis experience is highly regarded but is not essential. We also welcome candidates from pharmaceutical, nutraceutical/complementary medicine and other GMP-regulated contract manufacturing environments who bring strong CMO experience and a proven track record in new business development.
  • Proven track record of identifying, developing and converting new business opportunities.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain senior-level customer and stakeholder relationships.
  • Experience managing complex commercial opportunities involving multiple internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated commercial capability in developing proposals, pricing solutions and negotiating commercial terms.
Skills
  • Strong understanding of GMP manufacturing principles and the commercial considerations associated with regulated manufacturing.
  • Strong commercial acumen, including an understanding of pricing, margins, volumes, capacity, lead times and customer economics.
  • Strong commercial negotiation and proposal development capability.
  • Ability to understand technical, manufacturing, quality and operational requirements and translate these into commercially viable customer solutions.
  • Ability to assess customer requirements and work collaboratively with technical and operational teams to determine feasibility.
What We Offer
  • A fully remote role within Australia.
  • The opportunity to take ownership of and grow an important area of Cann’s commercial business.
  • A role with significant autonomy and the opportunity to build and develop the CMO/white-label customer base.
