Job summary

Ability Action Australia is expanding its Behaviour Support team in Melbourne’s west and north‑west. You will join a structured 12-month development program designed to train you to become a confident Behaviour Support Practitioner, with supervision and multidisciplinary support.

Starting January 2027, the program includes University of Melbourne Micro-Credentials, with the company paying for study costs and providing paid study time.

Qualifications

• Qualification such as Social Work, Psychology or Mental Health related degree.
• Experience working with people with disability is advantageous.
• Own vehicle with full insurance is required.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills are essential.

Responsibilities

• Support people with disability to understand behaviour and develop practical strategies.
• Learn within a Positive Behaviour Support framework and participate in assessments and BSP development.
• Build families’ and carers’ skills and confidence; collaborate with an allied health team.
• Develop report writing and clinical reasoning skills through supervision and guidance.

Want to become a Behaviour Support Practitioner, but don’t currently hold a Behaviour Support Practitioner registration?

Perfect. We’ll help you sort that out.

Ability Action Australia is growing our Behaviour Support team across Melbourne’s west and north-west, and we’re looking for people ready to build a career in Positive Behaviour Support.

Starting January 2027, you’ll join our structured 12-month development program, designed to give you the training, supervision and support you need to become a confident Behaviour Support Practitioner.

You’ll learn alongside experienced Behaviour Support Practitioners and a multidisciplinary allied health team, with regular supervision and structured development throughout your first year.

Through our partnership with the University of Melbourne, you’ll have the opportunity to complete Micro-Credentials in Behaviour Support.

What will you actually be doing?

You’ll work alongside people with disability, their families and support networks to understand behaviour and create practical strategies that make a meaningful difference in everyday life.

With plenty of support, you’ll learn to:

• Work within a Positive Behaviour Support framework
• Complete assessments and develop evidence-based Behaviour Support Plans
• Create meaningful goals and practical strategies
• Work towards reducing and eliminating restrictive practices
• Build the skills and confidence of families, carers and support teams
• Develop your report writing and clinical reasoning skills
• Collaborate with a multidisciplinary allied health team

You won’t be expected to figure it all out by yourself. That’s what the 12-month program is for.

A little about you

Maybe you’re a recent graduate with some experience working in disability.

Maybe you’re currently working in disability, mental health, community services or another people-focused role and know Behaviour Support is where you want your career to go.

You don’t need to come to us currently registered as a Behaviour Support Practitioner.

That’s the whole point.

You’ll need:

• A relevant qualification such as Social Work, Psychology, Psychological Science, Mental Health Care Nursing or another related degree
• Some experience working with people with disability
• Your own fully insured vehicle
• Great communication and relationship-building skills
• A genuine interest in Positive Behaviour Support
• A willingness to learn and grow

A note for Provisional Psychologists

Your psychology background can provide a great foundation for Behaviour Support, but Behaviour Support is a career pathway in its own right.

This role isn’t a stepping stone into a Psychology position. We’re looking for people who genuinely want to build their career in Positive Behaviour Support.
