Job summary

Rio Tinto Weipa is seeking Local Aboriginal Persons (LAP) Plant Operator Trainees to learn how bauxite is processed and to gain practical experience in mineral processing operations in a safe, team-based environment.

This traineeship provides a clear pathway into long-term careers within processing and operations at Weipa, with 12-hour day/night rosters, pre-start checks, and a strong emphasis on safety and teamwork.

Qualifications

• Current Driver's licence is required.
• LAP Status approval is required.
• Provide complete application kit (Resume, Driver's Licence, LAP Status form and application form).
• Be able to undertake rostered 12hr Day/night shifts.
• Be physically fit and pass required testing.

Responsibilities

• Operate and monitor beneficiation plant equipment used to wash, screen and process bauxite ore.
• Assist with safe operation of conveyors, crushers, screens, pumps, and processing equipment.
• Conduct routine plant inspections and identify equipment faults or issues.
• Monitor plant performance and report abnormalities to supervisors.
• Complete pre-start inspections and safety checks.
• Maintain clean and safe work areas and document shift data.
• Respond to plant alarms and follow procedures under supervision.
