Job summary

Peoplebank invites applications for a backend engineer role focused on Java-based services. This is a fully remote opportunity across Australia, with a 6-month contract and potential extension.

You will design, develop and operate cloud-native backend systems using Java, Spring Boot and AWS, addressing incident management and reliability across distributed architectures to deliver scalable, high-availability platforms.

Qualifications

• 3-5 years' experience developing backend applications using Java
• Strong commercial experience with Spring Boot and REST API development
• Hands-on AWS experience including Step Functions, SQS, SNS, DynamoDB and Aurora/SQL databases
• Experience working with distributed systems and event-driven architectures
• Strong production support, troubleshooting and incident management skills
• Ability to analyse logs, metrics and monitoring data to identify root causes
• Experience with observability tools such as Splunk, SignalFx or similar
• Proven ability to take ownership of incidents through to resolution

Responsibilities

• Designing, developing and maintaining scalable Java-based backend services and APIs
• Building and supporting cloud-native solutions within AWS
• Investigating production incidents and performing root-cause analysis
• Debugging failures across distributed systems and event-driven architectures
• Recovering workflows and automating operational support processes
• Monitoring application health, performance and reliability
• Driving continuous improvement initiatives focused on resilience, scalability and operational excellence
• Collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality software at scale
