Job description

We are seeking a Senior Data Engineer to join our team to lead the design, development, and delivery of enterprise data engineering solutions. This role will provide technical leadership across data integration, migration, transformation, and analytics initiatives while mentoring team members and collaborating with stakeholders to deliver scalable and reliable data platforms.

This is a hands‑on technical leadership position suited to an experienced data professional with strong expertise in modern cloud data platforms, ETL/ELT delivery, and data modelling.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and implement enterprise data engineering solutions.
• Identify, transform, and integrate data sources into scalable data platforms.
• Develop and maintain structured and unstructured data pipelines.
• Design and implement solutions for data storage, analytics, machine learning, and data sharing requirements.
• Lead data migration, transformation, integration, and consolidation activities.
• Apply and promote best‑practice engineering methods, tools, and design patterns.
• Collaborate with business stakeholders, data professionals, and technical teams to define data requirements and deliver outcomes.
• Implement and maintain data quality frameworks and governance practices.
• Integrate data science and analytical solutions into production environments.
• Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance to junior engineers.
• Strong expertise in SQL development, query optimisation, performance tuning, and code reviews.
• Extensive hands‑on experience with Microsoft Azure data platforms and cloud‑based data solutions.
• Proven experience designing and implementing ETL/ELT pipelines.
• Strong understanding of dimensional data modelling, including star and snowflake schema design.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, source control (Git), automated testing, and deployment frameworks.
• Ability to work independently, provide technical leadership, and review solution designs.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Experience troubleshooting production issues and managing competing priorities.

Highly Desirable

• Experience delivering data solutions within the Australian Federal Government.
• Experience with Microsoft 365, Azure Data Factory, Synapse Analytics, Microsoft Fabric, Databricks, or related technologies.
• Experience working within secure or classified environments.
• Exposure to analytics, machine learning, and modern data platform architectures.
