Job summary

Optus in Belrose, Sydney, is seeking an Associate Satellite Controller to join a small operations team. You will be responsible for on-orbit command, real-time telemetry, tracking, and control of spacecraft, working onsite on a 24/7 roster.

The role requires Australian citizenship to obtain security clearance and a tertiary engineering qualification. You will pursue Optus Satellite Controller Certification over ~2 years and engage in ongoing training for TTC systems and payload operations.

Qualifications

• Australian citizenship is required.
• Ability to obtain Australian Defence Security Clearance.
• Tertiary qualification in Electrical/Electronic/Aerospace engineering or related field.
• Interest in completing Optus Satellite Controller Certification (~2 years).
• Experience in Telecommunications, Satellite Communications, Aerospace or Defence sectors.
• Ability to work with complex satellite ground systems and real-time control.

Responsibilities

• Ensure health, safety, and performance of spacecraft under Optus control and manage on-orbit command and control activities.
• Operate and maintain ground-based telemetry, tracking, and command hardware for real-time monitoring and control.
• Perform routine spacecraft and TTC control activities and respond to anomalies and contingencies.
• Work as part of a small operations team under supervision of the Satellite Control Shift Leader.
• Gain knowledge to Optus Satellite Controller Certification standard with ongoing training.
• Participate in training for TTC ground systems and spacecraft bus payload operations.

Job description

Optus owns and operates a fleet of geostationary satellites for the provision of Satellite Services to customers spanning the corporate, consumer, and government sectors. The Satellite Operations group is responsible for managing and operating the Optus and NBN Co. Satellite Fleets, including all space and ground-based infrastructure.

Based onsite in Belrose, Sydney. The Satellite Control team is responsible for on-orbit operations of all satellites under Optus' control, managing, operating, and maintaining all ground-based infrastructure (TTC Systems), and providing specialist operations and engineering expertise in the delivery of Telemetry, Tracking and Command projects, and Professional Satellite Services to external customers.

Please note: The incumbent must be an Australian Citizen and either hold or be able to obtain an Australian Department of Defence (AGSVA) Security Clearance.

The day to day

• Ensure the health, safety, and performance of all spacecraft under Optus control and implement all command and control activities associated with managing the spacecraft on-orbit.
• Operate and maintain all ground-based telemetry, tracking, and command hardware and systems required for real-time monitoring and control of spacecraft.
• Perform routine spacecraft and ground TTC control activities, initiate and perform corrective actions in response to spacecraft anomalies, contingencies, and emergencies, as well as ground equipment and system failures.
• Work as an integral member of a small operations team of two to four individuals under the direction and supervision of the Satellite Control Shift Leader.
• Gain expert operational knowledge and professional skills to Optus Satellite Control Certification standard, and with ongoing continuity and re-familiarisation training.
• Actively participate in further training in the theory and operation of new and evolving TTC ground systems, spacecraft bus and payload types.

• Experience in Telecommunications, Satellite Communications, Aerospace sectors, or Defence Capabilities.
• Ability to comprehend and work with complex satellite-based systems, ground-based TTC systems, Satellite Communication Technologies, Antenna systems, RF, Baseband, SCADA, and Real-time Computer systems.
• Analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to move easily between practical and analytic domains.
• Experience working within a complex real-time environment and with system-level fault diagnosis and repair.
• Effectively multitask and coordinate critical operational workloads and competing priorities in a demanding operations environment.
