Job description

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - Structural Engineering * Equity Opportunity

  • Sydney CBD * Leadership of Sydney Structures * Established Consultancy * Genuine Equity Options
  • 15+ years' experience? Ability to develop technical expertise?
  • Well known and regarded consultancy with impressive growth
  • Name your salary, envisaged $290-250k depending on experience

You've helped build a successful engineering career. Isn't it time you had a stake in the business you're helping to grow?

You've spent years developing your technical expertise, leading significant structural engineering projects and establishing trusted relationships with architects, developers and clients.

You've earned your position as a senior leader. But what comes next?

  • Another title? More projects? Greater responsibility without a meaningful share in the success you're helping create?
  • What if your next career move offered the opportunity to lead an established structural engineering operation, influence the direction of the business and participate in its future growth through genuine equity opportunities?
  • A highly regarded multidisciplinary engineering consultancy, based in Sydney's CBD, is seeking an accomplished Associate Director of Structural Engineering to take a leading role in its Sydney operations.

This is an opportunity for someone who wants more than a senior management title.

  • Lead an established business. Help shape its future.
  • The consultancy has developed a strong reputation, an established client base and a substantial pipeline of structural engineering projects.
  • Its experience includes multi-storey residential, commercial and mixed-use developments, with opportunities to further develop its presence across other building sectors.
  • The business isn't looking for someone to arrive and create a structural division from nothing.

The foundation is already there.

  • What it needs is an experienced engineering leader who can strengthen its technical capability, develop the team, build on existing client relationships and help take the Sydney structural operation to its next stage.
  • You won't be expected to arrive with a substantial order book.
  • Your technical reputation, leadership qualities, commercial judgement and ability to develop lasting client relationships are far more important.

Technical leadership with genuine influence

As Associate Director, you'll have significant responsibility for the technical performance, people and ongoing development of the Sydney structural engineering team.

You'll remain involved in major technical decisions and complex structural engineering challenges while providing direction and guidance to the engineers around you.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading the Sydney structural engineering operation and supporting its continued growth.
  • Providing high-level technical leadership across significant building projects.
  • Overseeing structural design quality, technical reviews and engineering standards.
  • Managing, mentoring and developing Structural Engineers and Designers.
  • Taking responsibility for project delivery, client satisfaction and commercial outcomes.
  • Building strong relationships with architects, developers, builders and other consultants.
  • Identifying and developing new business opportunities through existing and emerging client relationships.
  • Working closely with fellow directors and senior management on the future direction of the business.
  • Contributing to strategic decisions, team development and the expansion of structural engineering services.

This isn't a role where you'll simply supervise engineers from a distance.

  • Your technical credibility will remain central to your success, but you'll also have the autonomy to influence how the operation develops.
  • Build on what's established. Expand into what you're passionate about.
  • The consultancy already has a substantial presence in multi-storey residential and mixed-use buildings.
  • However, there is genuine interest in broadening its structural engineering capabilities.
  • High-rise residential and mixed-use developments.
  • Major commercial buildings and complex structures.
  • Hospitals and healthcare facilities.
  • Education, universities and institutional buildings.
  • Hotels and hospitality developments.
  • Industrial buildings and specialist structures.
  • Public buildings and major community facilities.

If you have strong technical expertise and established relationships in one of these sectors, there is an opportunity to develop that capability further within the business.

  • Rather than simply managing an existing workload, you could help establish new areas of growth around your own strengths and experience.
  • Business development without the pressure of bringing an order book
  • The consultancy recognises that successful engineering leaders do more than deliver technically correct designs.
  • They understand what clients are trying to achieve.
  • They listen, communicate clearly, appreciate commercial realities and develop practical engineering solutions that build confidence and long‑term relationships.
  • You'll be expected to contribute to business development, but that doesn't mean arriving with a list of clients and an immediate revenue target.
  • The business already has established relationships and ongoing work.
  • What matters is your ability to strengthen those relationships, recognise opportunities and represent the consultancy professionally.

You don't need to bring the business with you.

  • You need to demonstrate the qualities that will help the business continue to grow.
  • Equity opportunities – a genuine reason to consider moving
  • One of the most significant attractions of this opportunity is the availability of equity participation.
  • For the right person, there are genuine options to become a shareholder in the business, subject to mutually agreed terms.
  • This creates the potential to benefit not only from your salary and seniority, but also from the longer‑term success of the consultancy you're helping to lead.
  • It's an opportunity to think beyond the next salary review and consider where you want to be in five or ten years.
  • You could continue building value for someone else's business.
  • Or you could help build a business in which you have a genuine ownership interest.

What will make you successful?

You'll ideally be an established Associate Director, Principal or highly accomplished Associate Structural Engineer with:

  • Extensive Australian structural engineering consultancy experience, particularly within NSW.
  • Strong technical expertise in significant building structures.
  • The credibility to lead and oversee complex structural design projects.
  • Demonstrated experience managing and developing engineering teams.
  • Established relationships with architects, developers, builders or other professional clients.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Sound commercial awareness, including an understanding of project profitability and client expectations.
  • The confidence to represent the consultancy at senior client and stakeholder level.
  • An interest in business development and expanding the consultancy's structural engineering capability.
  • The ambition to contribute to strategic leadership and potentially become an equity participant.

Most importantly, you'll have the personality and leadership qualities to bring people together, create a positive working environment and earn the confidence of both clients and colleagues.

Your next move should be about more than a title.

  • If you're already operating at a senior level but feel your influence, autonomy or ownership opportunities are limited, this position deserves serious consideration.
  • You'll be joining an established and respected Sydney CBD consultancy with the projects, clients and technical foundations already in place.
  • What they're looking for is the right person to lead, develop and strengthen the structural engineering operation for the future.
  • You're not being asked to make a career decision today.
  • Just have a confidential conversation and explore whether this opportunity could offer something your current organisation cannot.
  • You've built your reputation. Now help build something you can have a stake in.

All enquiries will be treated in the strictest confidence. Note: Only Australian / New Zealand applicants with local experience are encouraged to apply.
