Job description

About us

The Hospital Research Foundation Group (THRF) Group is a leading not-for-profit organisation with a proud history of funding life-changing medical research and improving patient care for communities across Australia. We support more than 60 areas of disease and illness, working with hospitals, universities, researchers, clinicians and community partners to deliver meaningful impact.

Our people are united by a shared commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of our community. When you join THRF Group, you become part of a purpose-driven and supportive organisation where collaboration, curiosity and continuous improvement help make a lasting difference.

As our organisation continues to grow, we are seeking an Assistant Accountant to join our collaborative Finance team. This role will help strengthen the financial systems and processes that underpin our work and enable our organisation to continue making a meaningful impact.

About the role

Reporting to the Senior Finance Manager, the Assistant Accountant supports accurate, timely and well-controlled financial operations across THRF Group's complex, multi-entity environment. You will complete key accounting tasks, reconciliations and finance processes while maintaining complete, accurate and up-to-date records.

This is a hands-on role for someone who is proactive, collaborative and ready to contribute as a true team player. You will work closely with colleagues across Finance and the wider organisation, adapt confidently to new systems and processes, and identify practical opportunities to improve accuracy, automation and efficiency. Part-time employment may be considered for the right applicant, however, some periods of full-time coverage will be required.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Complete monthly bank, balance sheet, investment portfolio and merchant facility reconciliations, investigating and resolving discrepancies promptly.
  • Maintain accurate financial records, balance sheet workpapers, fixed asset registers and month-end journals across multiple entities.
  • Provide reliable backup support for payroll and the accounts receivable and payable functions.
  • Assist with statutory and organisational reporting, including BAS, ABS reporting, grant acquittals, audit schedules, annual budgets and ACNC financial reporting.
  • Partner proactively with Finance colleagues and stakeholders across THRF Group to solve issues, share information and meet agreed timeframes.
  • Adapt to new systems and processes, support entity integrations and identify opportunities to improve automation, data accuracy and ways of working.
About you

You will bring strong attention to detail, a proactive approach and a genuine interest in supporting high-quality financial outcomes while working collaboratively in a diverse team. You will also bring the following:

  • Tertiary or postgraduate qualifications in accounting, with demonstrated experience in a similar accounting or corporate finance role.
  • Experience working in a complex, multi-entity environment across payroll, financial reporting, reconciliations, analysis and month-end processes.
  • Strong technical capability across ERP and general ledger systems, advanced Microsoft Excel skills and experience with CRM platforms such as Dynamics.
  • A proactive, curious and adaptable approach, with the confidence to learn new systems, seek answers and recommend practical improvements.
  • Excellent attention to detail, prioritisation and communication skills, together with a collaborative team-player mindset and the ability to build trusted stakeholder relationships.

If you are a proactive and adaptable accounting professional who enjoys collaborating, supporting others and improving processes, we want to hear from you!
