Job summary

HorizonOne Recruitment is assisting a well-established Commonwealth agency in Canberra to recruit a Project Manager to lead the Building Projects team through planning, procurement and delivery of complex building and infrastructure projects.

You will manage projects through the full lifecycle, supervise daily activities, develop plans, oversee budgets, contract admin, and coordinate with stakeholders across government and exhibition delivery teams, while fostering continuous improvement.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience managing building, construction, infrastructure or facilities projects in a complex operational environment.
• Strong project management skills, including procurement and contract management, budget oversight, risk management and stakeholder engagement.

Responsibilities

• Undertake independent research, draft reports and briefs, and provide specialist technical advice across project activities.
• Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including government agencies and exhibition delivery teams.
• Contribute to short-term and longer-term strategic planning and identify opportunities for business improvement.

Join a well-established Commonwealth agency that operates a major public visitor attraction in Canberra, alongside national outreach programs delivered to communities across the country.

The Commonwealth Government has recently committed significant new funding to support property upgrades, refreshed visitor experiences, and the continued delivery of national outreach programs.

The Opportunity

This role has been created to help deliver that capital works program, and you’ll lead the Building Projects team through the planning, procurement and delivery of complex building and infrastructure projects.

You’ll manage projects through the full lifecycle, from business case development through to implementation and evaluation, largely under your own direction.

You’ll have the opportunity to:

• Manage projects end-to-end under limited direction, from business case through to delivery and evaluation
• Direct exposure to a well-funded, multi-year capital works program, backed by new Commonwealth funding
• A mix of the technical and the people side
• Some supervisory scope, with support from senior staff, overseeing the Building Projects team’s priorities and outputs
• A varied portfolio, spanning building improvements, asset upgrades and visitor-facing exhibition works

The Role

As Project Manager, you’ll manage a pipeline of building and infrastructure projects through their full lifecycle, from business case to delivery.

You’ll be:

• Supervising the Building Projects team day to day, setting priorities and maintaining quality of outputs, with support from senior staff
• Developing and managing project plans, oversee implementation, monitor budgets, and coordinate risk assessment and management, working with independence under limited direction
• Administering contracts and service agreements, lead tender and selection processes, and manage contractor performance in line with Commonwealth requirements
• Exercising judgement on complex, sometimes sensitive tasks, applying regulations, best-practice principles and the agency’s own procedures
• Building team capability through coaching, feedback, training and professional development
• Undertaking independent research, draft reports and briefs, and provide specialist technical advice across project and program activities
• Building and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including technical specialists, government agencies, contractors and exhibition delivery teams
• Contributing to short-term and longer-term strategic planning, and identify opportunities for business improvement

The Ideal Person

You’ve managed building, construction, infrastructure or facilities projects in a complex operational environment before, and you’re comfortable exercising judgement and moving projects forward without close supervision.

You will bring the following skills and experience:

• Demonstrated experience managing building, construction, infrastructure or facilities projects in a complex operational environment
• Strong project management skills, including procurement and contract management, budget oversight, risk management and stakeholder engagement
• The ability to exercise initiative and sound judgement, and deliver high-quality outcomes under limited direction
• The ability to build productive relationships and communicate clearly with a wide range of stakeholders, including where interests are sensitive or competing
• A commitment to continuous improvement, safety and collaboration

It’s also desirable if you have:

• Experience working with construction contractors, consultants and multidisciplinary teams
• An understanding of asset management, facilities operations or capital works delivery

Salary / Rate

• $70/hr – $80/hr + Super
• Labour hire contract with an immediate start through to the 30th of June 2027
• Canberra-based, with potential remote work
• Standard business hours, with occasional out-of-hours or weekend work required for this 7-day operating site
