Job summary

Fire and Rescue NSW is seeking an Apprentice Fire Vehicle Repairer to start a four-year journey toward becoming a Heavy Vehicle Motor Mechanic. You’ll work on critical fleet vehicles, gaining hands-on experience with diagnostics, welding, and maintenance.

The role offers structured learning, a training certificate, and opportunities to advance within FRNSW. You will learn in a supportive environment with a clear career progression path.

Qualifications

• Certificate or traineeship in heavy vehicle mechanics preferred.
• Strong mechanical aptitude for repair, service and maintenance of heavy vehicles.
• Willingness to learn and complete the apprenticeship.
• Ability to work in a team and communicate effectively.

Responsibilities

• Interpret mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic diagrams for service and repairs.
• Use vehicle diagnosis equipment and software to troubleshoot.
• Utilise precision measuring devices for accurate work.
• Handle hand and power tools safely and effectively.
• Operate welding and oxy-acetylene cutting equipment.
• Service, repair, maintain and inspect FRNSW vehicles and appliances.

Apprentice Fire Vehicle Repairer - Fire and Rescue NSW

• Participate in the Automotive - Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology Certificate apprenticeship with the aim of becoming a Fire and Rescue NSW Heavy Vehicle Motor Mechanic after 4 years
• Salary: $653.70 per week (1st Year Apprentice), and tool allowance and superannuation

As an Apprentice Fire Vehicle Repairer of FRNSW, you will build skills and develop experience in the following:

• Interpretation of mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic diagrams to undertake service, repairs and maintenance
• Use of vehicle diagnosis equipment and software
• Correct use of precision measuring devices
• Use of hand tools, power tools and various workshop equipment
• Operation of welding and oxy‑acetylene cutting equipment
• Service, repair, maintain and inspect all FRNSW vehicles and appliances
• Use of the FRNSW Fleet Management Computer System
• Participate in field service work

• Eligible for a Record of School Achievement (RoSA) before commencement of apprenticeship
• Successful completion of the School Certificate
