Job summary

Great Southern Bank in Brisbane is hiring an API Engineer to design, build and support secure, scalable APIs across digital channels. You’ll work with Java, Spring Boot and modern cloud technologies to empower customer experiences and automate delivery.

The role spans junior to senior levels with opportunities to own complex API solutions and influence engineering practices within the team. Strong collaboration with security and platform teams is essential.

Qualifications

• Software engineering experience focused on API design and development, varied by level.
• Hands-on experience developing APIs using Java and Spring Boot.
• Understanding of API standards, integration patterns and reusable service design.
• Experience deploying or supporting applications in containerised or cloud environments such as OpenShift or AWS.
• Familiarity with automated testing and CI/CD pipelines.

As our highly valued API Engineer based in Brisbane, your role will design, build and support secure, reusable and high-performing APIs that underpin Great Southern Bank’s digital customer experiences.

We’re currently hiring at both junior and senior levels, creating opportunities for engineers looking to build their API capability as well as experienced engineers ready to take greater technical ownership and influence how we deliver integration services across the Bank.

Working with Java, Spring Boot and modern cloud and integration technologies, you’ll help build resilient and scalable services that enable customers to bank simply and securely across our digital channels.

You’ll make an impact by:

• Designing, building and supporting domain APIs using Java, Spring Boot and established API standards
• Applying reusable API patterns to deliver consistent, scalable and maintainable integration services
• Building automated testing and CI/CD practices into delivery to support quality, resilience and safe change
• Engineering APIs with strong observability, monitoring, performance and scalability
• Deploying and supporting APIs across OpenShift and AWS environments
• Integrating APIs with identity and access management solutions to support secure authentication and authorisation
• Working with engineers, architects, security and platform teams to deliver secure and supportable end-to-end solutions
• Identifying opportunities to improve automation, simplify delivery and strengthen engineering practices

You’ll be part of our Customer Technology & Workflow team, developing APIs that enable digital self-service and support experiences across online and mobile banking, our website, contact centre and branch channels.

With opportunities available at both junior and senior levels, we’ll consider the experience and capability you bring. At the junior level, you’ll be supported by experienced engineers and our Integration Technical Lead to deepen your skills and grow your technical capability. At the senior level, you’ll take greater ownership of complex API solutions, help shape engineering practices and support the capability of others within the team.

You’ll work with Java, Spring Boot, OpenShift, AWS, automated delivery, observability and modern API security practices while contributing to technology that is secure, reusable and built to scale.

We also know great engineers come from different backgrounds. You don’t need to tick every box to apply. If you have strong engineering foundations, a willingness to learn and an interest in building quality API solutions, we’d like to hear from you.

To succeed in this role, you will have:

• Software engineering experience with a focus on API design and development, with the depth of experience varying depending on the level of role
• Hands‑on experience developing APIs using Java and Spring Boot
• An understanding of API standards, integration patterns and reusable service design
• Experience deploying or supporting applications in containerised or cloud environments such as OpenShift or AWS
• Familiarity with automated testing and CI/CD pipelines
• Exposure to observability, monitoring, performance and operational support practices
• A collaborative approach and willingness to learn from and share knowledge with engineers, testers, architects and other technology specialists
• For the senior opportunity, the ability to take greater technical ownership, navigate complexity and support the development of engineering capability within the team
• Experience within financial services or another regulated environment is helpful, but not essential
