Job summary

TAL is seeking a Senior Data Engineer for a 12-month contract to design, build and test actuarial data systems across Microsoft SQL Server, Azure and related platforms. You will deliver reliable data pipelines and contribute to finance reporting initiatives while ensuring security and scalability.

The role involves collaborating with the Actuarial Systems team, implementing ETL solutions, and working in a hybrid Sydney/Melbourne environment.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience with the Microsoft data stack (SQL Server, T-SQL, SSIS, Views and Stored Procedures)
• Hands-on experience with Azure data services (ADF, Azure SQL)
• Familiarity with Atlassian workflow tools (JIRA, Confluence)

Responsibilities

• Design, build, test and implement actuarial data systems and processes, integrating with the TAL Data Platform and financial platforms.
• Assist with implementation of accounting and finance changes and reporting platforms.
• Ensure security, reliability, usability, efficiency, and scalability of delivered data products.
• Develop technical designs for major product changes.
• Ensure code quality via reviews and peer education.
• Design, build, test and implement data pipelines in traditional and cloud environments using ETL methodologies.

Job description

Senior Data Engineer – 12 Month Contract

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, test and implement Actuarial data systems and processes, integrating primarily with the TAL Data Platform, Prophet Enterprise platform and TAL Finance Platform.
• Assist with implementation of accounting standards AASB17, business planning solution changes and Finance reporting platform.
• Ensure that delivered products are secure, reliable, usable, efficient, effective and, where required, highly available and scalable.
• Develop technical designs for step-changes in the products.
• Ensure quality of code and adherence to platform frameworks and guidelines through code reviews and peer education.
• Design, build, test and implement data pipelines in both traditional and cloud base environments using ETL methodologies.

Technical Skills

• Strong technical background, ideally having worked as a developer for 5+ years, including experience with the Microsoft stack SQL Server, database, T‑SQL, SSIS, Views and Stored Procedures as well as MS Azure technology stack in particular ADF, Azure SQL and a working understanding of Azure Develops
• Experience with Atlassian software workflow and documentation tools – JIRA and Confluence.

Working across Microsoft SQL Server and Azure platforms, you will design and build production‑ready data integration solutions, develop reconciliation and validation reporting, maintain database environments, and provide operational support for critical production processes.
