Job description

At Intelligen, we’re building something different. Over the past three years, we’ve evolved from a bold startup to a trusted partner for some of Australia’s most complex data transformations. We’ve helped organisations move from legacy to modern platforms, embedded governance into decision‑making, and are bringing AI into the hands of the business, responsibly and at speed.

Now, as we scale into our next phase, we’re focused on helping organisations move beyond isolated AI experiments and turn promising ideas into practical solutions. Our approach brings together the right problem, the right people and lightweight technology to create outcomes users can understand, trust and adopt.

We’re looking for an AI Engineer who can support our client apply business logic to narrow in on AI use cases of value, build practical workflows and agents, and keep moving until the solution works.

This is a hands‑on role for a curious problem‑solver who can work with stakeholders to uncover useful AI opportunities, build and improve lightweight agents, and take solutions from an unclear starting point through to a practical outcome. Learning speed, judgement and communication matter just as much as deep engineering specialisation.

This role is ideal for someone who can:

  • Ask the right questions and turn an unclear business problem into a useful AI opportunity
  • Build, test and embed practical AI solutions, rather than stopping at an experiment
  • Explain their thinking, trade‑offs and limitations clearly to stakeholders
  • Take ownership from discovery through to delivery, adoption and a measurable outcome
Key Responsibilities
AI Opportunity Discovery
  • Work with stakeholders to explore business problems and identify practical, valuable AI use cases
  • Ask targeted questions to understand existing workflows, constraints and user needs
  • Turn unclear starting points into defined, testable problems connected to measurable value
Agent Prototyping & Delivery
  • Build, test and improve lightweight AI agents using platforms such as Foundry, Bedrock and ChatGPT, including assisting in the development of AI Gateways.
  • Troubleshoot issues, test assumptions and refine solutions until they produce a practical outcome
  • Explain technical limitations and trade‑offs honestly, adjusting the approach when needed
Stakeholder Facilitation & Adoption
  • Facilitate stakeholder sessions and maintain momentum from discovery through to delivery
  • Communicate progress, decisions and constraints clearly to technical and non‑technical audiences
  • Provide training and practical guidance so users can adopt solutions confidently
Responsible AI & Expectation Management
  • Set realistic expectations about what AI can and cannot do
  • Apply grounded judgement to AI capabilities, risks, limitations and responsible use
  • Ensure solutions are useful, testable and appropriate to the business context
  • 4+ years’ experience across 1 or more of the following; AI engineering, machine learning engineering, data engineering, or modern data platform delivery
  • 1-2 years practical experience experimenting with or building AI agents and LLM-enabled solutions
  • Confident stakeholder communication, active listening and workshop facilitation
  • Strong curiosity and a structured approach to problem‑solving
  • The ability to learn new tools quickly and apply them to real business problems
  • A grounded understanding of AI capabilities, risks and limitations
  • The ability to explain your thinking clearly and take ownership through to an outcome
Nice to Have
  • Experience building AI-enabled applications, agent frameworks, or machine learning solutions in enterprise environments
  • Experience with prompt design, agent workflows, automation or rapid prototypingPrevious consulting or client‑facing delivery experience
  • Experience contributing to AI CoE practice initiatives.
What Success Looks Like
  • Stakeholders feel heard and the real problem is clearly defined
  • AI use cases are practical, testable and connected to measurable value
  • Solutions move from experiment to completion, with users trained and expectations managed
  • Users understand the solution, its limitations and how to use it confidently
  • Governance and control measures are built in and defensible
  • Value based success metrics are measurable
