Job summary

CSIRO's Pest Detection Technologies team in Brisbane invites applications for a Research Projects Officer to advance AI-enabled pest detection and surveillance through biology, imaging, sensing and software development.

You will contribute to experimental design, field trials and data management, operate imaging and drone systems, curate datasets and collaborate with researchers to deliver practical prototypes for real-world biosecurity challenges.

Qualifications

• A relevant degree in biological, agricultural, environmental, data or imaging science, or a related discipline, with research or technical experience.
• Experience planning and conducting laboratory or field research, including experimental design, data collection, QA, analysis and interpretation.
• Ability to collect, organise and maintain image-based or sensor-based datasets, metadata and records.
• Problem-solving skills to identify and resolve experimental, equipment, fieldwork or data-quality issues.
• Experience in data analysis and scientific computing with R and/or Python; willingness to learn GIS and image-analysis tools.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to research and/or technology through development of original or adapted experimental methods, equipment or software.
• Undertake a wide variety of tasks or tasks with a high degree of specialisation.
• Plan and conduct laboratory, field and data activities supporting optical pest detection and surveillance, including specimen preparation and drone imagery collection.
• Develop data-management protocols to generate reliable datasets and ensure quality assurance.
• Analyse data and evaluate pest-detection technologies and AI-enabled workflows, documenting performance and limitations.
