Full-Stack Engineer — Python + Web (AI-Augmented, Human-in-the-Loop)

The Mission

Foodini is a SaaS Dietary Intelligence Platform delivering AI-driven ingredient and dietary tagging for food tech and hospitality — from dining rooms to stadiums. We help people quickly and safely find menu options that meet their dietary and allergy requirements, verified by expert dietitians.

Because we operate where allergens and diets meet real plates, accuracy is not negotiable. A wrong tag is not a cosmetic bug — it is a safety issue. Everything we build is **quality-first**, and that principle shapes how we adopt AI: aggressively, but always with human judgement holding the wheel.

We are at a pivotal moment. Our stack — more than ten repositories spanning APIs, queues, and web and mobile interfaces — is being reworked to support significant organisational growth and to embrace an agentic, AI-as-peer approach across the development lifecycle. You will help us move into that world, where AI is a core collaborator throughout delivery, without ever loosening the rigour a dietary-safety product demands.

The Role

We are looking for a **Junior to Mid-Senior Full-Stack Engineer (Python + Web)** who sees today's AI shift as a chance to change how software is built — and who is equally clear that velocity must never come at the cost of correctness.

You won't just maintain systems. You'll be a key contributor in turning an existing, real-world codebase into a well-documented, well-tested, high-performance platform that humans and AI agents can both work in safely. The day-to-day spans backend APIs, asynchronous queue workers, and web front ends, with mobile in the mix — all increasingly AI-assisted or AI-driven, and all gated by human-led review.

The core of the job is finding the **sweet spot between speed and safety**: collaborating with the CTO and Lead Developer to push velocity through agentic tooling while keeping architecture, schema, and approach firmly human-led. We want someone who can drive an agent hard, then critically validate what it produced — and know the difference between "it ran" and "it's right."

You will work at least three days a week in our West End (Brisbane) office alongside the CTO and Lead Developer, and with our high-energy team of business development, sales, and dietitians across Australia, the US, the Philippines, and Canada.

Key Responsibilities

- **AI-augmented delivery, end to end.** Help transition our existing codebase into an AI-ready environment — product design, prioritisation and ticketing, documentation, architecture, automated testing, and CI/CD — using AI-first or AI-assisted workflows with clear human quality and supervisory gates at every stage.

- **Build features across the stack.** Develop and improve our Python APIs, queue workers, and React.js web interfaces (and contribute to our Flutter and React user-facing apps where needed), maintaining or improving quality and performance as you go.

- **Human-in-the-loop by design.** Help define and tune the workflows, guardrails, and checkpoints that let agents move fast while keeping a human accountable for architecture, schema, and correctness — especially anywhere allergen or dietary logic is involved.

- **Hybrid work in West End.** In person with the team at least three days a week (currently Mon–Wed).

Your First Three Months

Your first three months will be a variation on the following:

• Help expand our automated QA solution into a full fledged CI tool testing core APIs and ingestion functionality
• Lean the data, environment and architecture while resolving high priority tickets
• Help build an agentic suite of md files, skills and approaches to blend AI and Human capabilities to deliver quality work leveraging the strengths of both

Technical Requirements - 2 of the below

We value versatility and passion over a long list of years. The core skillset required for this role is Python and the web, so we expect strength in at least one of the first two below, plus genuine capability in another area — and a readiness to grow into the rest:

- Python / FastAPI / Pydantic — experience building robust, scalable APIs and the services and queues around them.

- Modern web (React.js / TypeScript) — delivering production web apps and admin tooling. *(Core)*

- Google Cloud Platform — designing and managing cloud infrastructure.

- Terraform & DevOps — infrastructure-as-code, Docker, CI/CD.

- GitHub CI/CD — build, test, and deploy pipelines.

- Flutter / mobile — iOS, Android, and webapp delivery (a plus, given our mobile interfaces).

AI

You must be genuinely excited about an agentic, AI-first development future — and clear-eyed about its limits. We want someone who actively uses AI-driven development tools, is eager to explore how agents improve productivity and reliability, and instinctively pairs that with human-in-the-loop checkpoints. The goal isn't to hand all the work to AI; it's to build a system where humans and agents each do what they're best at.

The Judgement Mandate

You must have real depth in at least two of the areas above, and — just as important — the ability to read, understand, and critically validate what our AI tools produce. In a dietary-safety domain, "looks plausible" is not "verified." We need someone who can keep architecture, schema, and approach human-led while letting AI handle the velocity, and who has the flexibility to keep adapting as the tooling evolves.
