Job summary

The Aboriginal Wellbeing Officer (AWO) role was established under the Victorian Aboriginal Justice Agreement to address the over-representation of Aboriginal people in the criminal justice system. AWOs support prisoners with culturally appropriate wellbeing and facilitate access to Indigenous-specific programs.

As part of Corrections Victoria's commitment, the role requires a Certificate of Aboriginality and offers a sign-on bonus to attract experienced candidates.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Victorian Aboriginal community.
  • Ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with members of the Victorian Aboriginal community.

Responsibilities

  • Provide cultural and practical support for Aboriginal prisoners by identifying strengths, aspirations and goals for returning to a non-offending lifestyle.
  • Interview and complete a wellbeing checklist with Aboriginal prisoners after reception to inform Indigenous-specific programs and services.
  • Provide cultural and wellbeing support to meet pre- and post-release needs and advocate on their behalf as appropriate.
  • Assist Aboriginal prisoners to access programs and entitlements to aid reintegration into the community.
