Job summary

Department of Justice and Community Safety in Victoria seeks an Aboriginal Cultural Advisor to provide senior guidance and on-site support across prison locations. You will work with Aboriginal women and offenders, helping to reinforce ties with communities and post-release partners.

You will operate within the Yilam team, leading design, development, implementation and monitoring of culturally informed policies and programs aimed at reducing over-representation.

Qualifications

  • A driver licence is required for this role.
  • Ability to work across multiple locations as staffing and prisoner numbers vary.
  • Designation requires a Certificate of Aboriginality (CoA) prior to appointment.

  • Provide senior advice and on-site support to multiple prison locations on cultural matters.
  • Create and strengthen linkages with Aboriginal organisations and post-release services.
  • Support the Yilam team to design and monitor CV policies and programs.

Job description

A driver licence is essential for this role with regular travel to prison locations required.

Key responsibilities
  • Provide senior advice and support to multiple prison locations on cultural matters.
  • Provide face to face, on-site assistance to AWO's and Aboriginal prisoners as required.
  • Create and strengthen linkages between the prison locations, Community Correctional Services, Aboriginal Community organisations, post release support agencies and the Victorian Aboriginal community.
  • This role sits within the Yilam team which is responsible for leading the design, development, implementation and monitoring of CV policies, programs and services aimed at reducing the over-representation of Aboriginal people within the Victorian correctional system.

  • This is a frontline role that services multiple locations which will vary depending on staffing levels and prisoner numbers thus ability to work across multiple locations is required for this role.
  • This is a designated role – A Certificate of Aboriginality (CoA) must be provided prior to being appointed to the role.
