Job summary

GambleAware South Eastern Sydney, St Vincent’s Public Hospital in Sydney is seeking an Aboriginal Peer Worker (Identified). The role is a max-term, part-time position (24 hours per week) to August 2028 with possible extension, in the Aboriginal Health Worker grade (Year 1-9).

Weekend work may be required and there is a strong focus on community engagement and culturally safe care. The role requires Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, a NSW driver’s licence, and experience in health

Qualifications

  • Identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, per NSW Anti-Discrimination Act provisions.
  • Current unrestricted NSW driver’s licence and ability to travel as required.
  • Relevant qualification and/or demonstrated experience with Aboriginal communities in health promotion.
  • Experience in community engagement and partnership development.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, computer literacy, and ability to work both independently and in a team.

Responsibilities

  • Support Aboriginal communities and people impacted by gambling harm through culturally sensitive engagement, education, peer support and health promotion.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with clients, providing direct peer support and practical recovery strategies.
  • Assist disengaged clients and connect them with GambleAware partners and health services.
  • Collaborate with Aboriginal communities and organisations, SVHS Drug Health Service and multidisciplinary teams to ensure culturally appropriate care.
  • Maintain accurate records and participate in training and supervision.
