Job summary

Holy Family Catholic Primary School Kelso is seeking an Aboriginal Education Officer to support Aboriginal students and families within a Catholic education context.

Reporting to the Principal and Leader of Aboriginal Education, you will work to accelerate outcomes, promote cultural inclusivity, and provide pastoral support. This role is identified and temporary part-time, with 60 hours per fortnight, commencing Jan 2027.

Qualifications

• Commitment to Catholic Education values such as social justice, equity, reconciliation.
• Strong literacy and numeracy skills relevant to students.
• Ability to work in a team to support Aboriginal students.
• Knowledge of issues affecting Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander students.
• Links with local Aboriginal community.
• Ability to promote Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander traditions and culture in the school.
• Evidence of at least 5 years workplace experience.

Responsibilities

• Act as intermediary for Aboriginal students and families within the school.
• Assist teaching staff to meet outcomes in school/diocesan plans for Indigenous students.

• Assist Principal and School Executive with pastoral care support for Aboriginal families.

About the Role

This is an identified position ie this position is open to people of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage.

We have an exciting opportunity for an Aboriginal Education Officer to join the team at Holy Family Catholic Primary School in Bathurst, NSW.

Reporting directly to the Principal, and accountable to the Education Officer: Leader of Aboriginal Education, the Aboriginal Education Officer performs a wide range of duties. These duties may consist of (but not limited to):

• To act as an intermediary and contact person for Aboriginal students and families within the school and school system
• To assist the teaching staff in achieving targets and meeting outcomes outlined in school and diocesan strategic plans in response to the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander National Education Strategy (2015) to accelerate improvements in educational outcomes for Aboriginal students and young people
• To support schools in ensuring that the curriculum is culturally inclusive across all Key Learning Areas (KLAs)
• To assist the Principal and School Executive by providing support for Aboriginal families to resolve student pastoral care issues
• To provide encouragement and emotional support for Aboriginal students.

• Demonstrate understanding of and sincere commitment to the aims and philosophy of Catholic Education, including the values of social justice, equity and reconciliation.
• Demonstrate an appropriate level of skill in literacy and numeracy especially as it relates to assisting students.
• Demonstrate ability to work as part of a team to cater for the needs of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander students.
• Demonstrate knowledge of educational issues that affect Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander students.
• Demonstrate links with the local Aboriginal community.
• Demonstrate ability to promote and celebrate Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander traditions and culture within the whole school.
• Provide proof of at least 5 years workplace experience.
