University of Vienna invites applications for a University Assistant praedoctoral in the Department of Education, Faculty of Philosophy and Education. The position starts 01.12.2026 with a 30-hour week and a limited contract under the praedoc scheme until 30.11.2030. The candidate will develop an individual PhD project, contribute to teaching and research, and participate in publications. The role supports international education research in a multicultural department.

Your Personal Sphere Of Influence

The advertised position is located in the Department of Education of the Faculty of Philosophy and Education. The Department's main responsibilities lie within the area of teaching and research in the field of Education. The research is centered on the description, critical analysis, and scientific explanation of phenomena of education. Your subject area will include the education and training processes in specially created social institutions (such as schools), as well as the educational and socialization processes in non-pedagogically institutionalised fields of social life (peer groups, milieus, media, etc.). The advertised position belongs to the professorship "School and Educational Research in an International Context" (direction: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Barbara Schulte).

Your Future Tasks

• Working on individual PhD project
• We expect the successful candidate to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 12-18 months
• Participation in research projects and applications / research studies
• Participation in publications / academic articles / presentations
• Participation in teaching and independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
• Supervision of students
• Involvement in the organisation of meetings, conferences, symposiums
• Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration

• A completed master's or diploma degree in educational science, educational studies, or pedagogy, or in another field with a focus on educational science, educational studies, or pedagogy
• Professional competence in the field of Comparative and International Education
• Methodological competence in the field of Comparative and International Education
• High ability to express yourself both orally and in writing
• Excellent command of written and spoken English
• Good command of an additional foreign language
• IT user skills
• Ability to work in a team

Desirable Qualifications Are

• Experience with qualitative research methods, in particular with document and policy analysis and fieldwork
• Research interest in recent international developments in education
• Initial experience regarding research on education in the Global South (particularly Asia)
• Knowledge of a non-European language
• Experience abroad
• Ability to work in a multicultural environment
• Teaching qualifications
