Jobbeschreibung

Test Engineer — Electromagnetic Tomography
About the Role

emtensor is seeking a proactive and multidisciplinary Test Engineer to join our Vienna-based laboratory. In this role, you will be the backbone of our daily experimental operations, ensuring our brain imaging systems meet the highest standards of accuracy and reliability.

You will not just “run tests” — you will design them, analyze the data, and provide critical feedback that shapes the future of our medical technology. You will work directly with our electromagnetic brain imaging prototype, executing calibration procedures, phantom-based validation studies, and RF characterization workflows that feed directly into our regulatory documentation package (EU MDR).

Your Profile
Education

Bachelor’s degree or higher (University, FH) in Medical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a comparable technical field.

Core Competencies
  • Strong analytical thinking and a high affinity for working with complex hardware-software systems; ability to translate technical imaging requirements into structured experimental protocols
  • Independent, reliable, and quality-focused working style with strong attention to detail — specificallyregardingmeasurement accuracy, calibration compliance, and technical documentation (Validation & Verification)
  • Comfortable following andmaintainingSOPs in a regulated medical device environment (ISO 13485 / EU MDR context)
  • Good command of English, written and spoken, is essential; German is notrequired
Technical Skills — Required
  • Experience with Vector Network Analyzers (VNA): S-parameter measurement, calibration, data export
  • Familiarity with RF measurement concepts: amplitude, phase, S-parameters, frequency sweeps
  • Ability to handle and document laboratory instrumentation including temperature sensors and environmental monitoring equipment
Technical Skills — Significant Advantage
  • Experience with CST Microwave Studio or equivalent EM simulation software (used for calibration reference data validation)
  • Python coding for data processing, signal analysis, or measurement automation
  • Familiarity with phantom construction and dielectric material characterization, including 3D-printed phantom shells, inclusion holders, and anatomical inserts (FDM or SLA; materials such as ABS, PETG, or resin with known dielectric properties)
  • Prior experience in a medical device or regulated laboratory environment
Domain Knowledge — Advantage
  • Basic understanding of human head and brain anatomy: major structures (cortex, white matter, ventricles, skull layers), typical tissue geometry, and anatomical variation across patient populations. This knowledge directly informs phantom design choices, inclusionpositioning, and interpretation of anomalous scan results.
  • Familiarity with clinical investigation concepts: informed consent, inclusion/exclusion criteria, adverse event reporting, source data, and the role of sponsor vs. investigator. The Test Engineer will interact with clinical data workflows and must understand the regulatory context of the measurements they produce.
Key Responsibilities
Daily Calibration and Environmental Monitoring

Execute the daily system calibration before each scanning session: empty field scan, automated S-parameter comparison against reference values, and verification of dual temperature sensor readings (ambient and intra-cavity). Log all results per calibration procedure. Escalate any out-of-tolerance conditions.

Conduct measurements and experiments using the emtensor brain imaging prototype. Operate the system according to approved procedures. Ensure data quality and traceability for every session.

Design of Experiments (DoE)

Create and implement testing protocols tovalidatesystem performance across hardware and software iterations. This includes phantom-based performance studies (detection threshold, linearity, reproducibility) and cross-functional validation campaigns.

VNA and RF Testing

Perform precise S-parameter measurements using VNA equipment. Manage RF components and interconnects within the imaging system. Support antenna array characterization and inter-channel performance verification.

CST Reference Data Maintenance

On a quarterly basis, support the export and cross-validation of CST Microwave Studio simulation results against measured empty-field baselines. Update calibration reference tables in coordination with Engineering.

Validation and Verification (V&V)

Lead the V&V process for phantom imaging studies. Ensure compliance with technical and medical specifications. Contribute to test traceability documentation.

Documentation and Reporting

Maintain rigorous, audit-ready documentation of all test results, calibration records, anomalies, and troubleshooting steps using the established document management system. Reporting in English using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Markdown-based documentation tools.

Cross-Functional Feedback

Act as the operational interface between the laboratory and the development team.Providedata-driven insights to improve system design, calibration procedures, and phantom protocols.

Scope Clarification

This role covers the Scan Operator function within the emtensor laboratory. It does not include image reading or diagnostic interpretation, which requires separate medical qualification and is handled by a designated reader.

What We Offer
  • Direct involvement in a cutting-edge medical imaging technology with a clear path to clinical and regulatory validation
  • A small, expert team where your experimental work has immediate impact on product development
  • Hands-on experience with an EU MDR regulatory workflow — valuable for any medical device career trajectory
  • Vienna-based laboratory environment; no travelrequired
