The position

We are looking for an outstanding candidate with a research focus in Medieval Latin philology, with particular emphasis on the literary and cultural history of the Middle Ages. We expect a broad profile in medieval Latin literature, proven expertise in manuscript tradition and methods of literary studies, as well as openness to interdisciplinary cooperation in the humanities. In teaching, the subject of Medieval Latin should be represented in its entire chronological and thematic breadth (language acquisition, literature, text mediation). Preferably, applicants should have proven expertise in the field of Late Latin Philology.

Research Environment

The Department of Classical Philology, Medieval and Neo-Latin Studies at the University of Vienna offers a dynamic, internationally exceptionally well-networked research environment. By uniting Greek and Latin Studies under one roof, the Department focuses on literary and philosophical texts from Greek antiquity, as well as Latin texts from antiquity through to the early modern period. Alongside the material transmission of texts, editorial philology, and reception history, literary studies constitute a central focus of the Department’s work. Within this profile, Medieval Latin Philology assumes a crucial bridging function between ancient and Late Antique literature on the one hand, and the Latin literature of the early modern period on the other.

With its world-class library and archive collections, Vienna offers excellent conditions for fundamental research in medieval studies for this tenure-track professorship. There are manifold opportunities for inter- and transdisciplinary cooperation within the University, for instance with Medieval German Studies, Byzantine Studies, History, Theology, and the Digital Humanities. Furthermore, the research location provides outstanding possibilities for close networking with non-university partners, most notably the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW).
