Job summary

REWE International Dienstleistungsgesellschaft m.b.H in Vienna is seeking a Senior Software Engineer (m/f/x) for our GIS team. You will design, develop and operate GIS applications and services, focusing on location planning, geomarketing and retail analytics across Austria and several CEE countries.

You will implement backend solutions in Java (Spring Boot), create REST APIs, optimize PostgreSQL/PostGIS and Oracle databases, and contribute to cloud-ready architectures.

Qualifications

• Several years of professional experience in software engineering and backend development.
• Strong knowledge of Java and modern backend frameworks (Spring Boot preferred).
• Experience designing REST APIs and distributed system integrations.
• Strong SQL skills with Oracle and PostgreSQL in an Enterprise setting.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills in English and German.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain business-critical GIS applications and services.
• Implement modern backend solutions using Java and related technologies following established architecture principles and development standards.
• Develop and maintain REST APIs, system integrations and data processing services.
• Design and optimise database structures, queries and data integration processes across PostgreSQL/PostGIS and Oracle environments.
• Collaborate with Business Analysts, Product Owners and other developers to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
• Contribute to the evolution of our GIS architecture towards modern, service-oriented and cloud-ready platforms.
• Support the operation, troubleshooting and continuous improvement of existing GIS applications.
• Participate in architectural discussions and contribute to technology decisions across the GIS landscape.

As the IT department of REWE Group Austria, we work together with more than 700 colleagues to develop innovative IT products and services for all business divisions in Austria and several international markets.

Within our GIS Team, we design, develop and operate solutions that support location planning, expansion, geomarketing, logistics, retail analytics and business decision-making across Austria and multiple CEE countries.

As part of our ongoing modernization journey, we are evolving our GIS landscape towards modern service-oriented architectures, cloud-native technologies and scalable data platforms while continuing to support business-critical GIS systems used throughout the REWE Group.

We are looking for a passionate Senior Software Engineer who enjoys working across application development, spatial data management and system integration, helping us shape the future of GIS solutions within an international retail environment.

• Design, develop and maintain business-critical GIS applications and services.

• Several years of professional experience in software engineering and backend development.
• Strong knowledge of Java and modern backend development frameworks (preferably Spring Boot).
• Experience designing and implementing REST APIs and distributed system integrations.
• Strong SQL skills and practical experience with relational databases, in an Enterprise setup (Oracle, PostgreSQL)
• Knowledge of database design, query optimisation and performance tuning.
• Experience with Git and modern software development workflows.
• Understanding of software architecture patterns, clean code principles and maintainable system design.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Independent, structured and reliable way of working.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
• Nice to have: Experience with GIS technologies and spatial data processing, PostGIS/Oracle Spatial, cloud platforms (e.g., GCP), Snowflake, and microservices architectures.
• Language skills: German and English: B2 level (confident verbal and written communication in a professional working environment)
