Job summary

REWE Group Österreich in Wien is seeking a Senior Software Engineer (m/f/x) for Geographic Information Systems (GIS). You will design, develop, and operate GIS applications and services supporting location planning, expansion, and analytics in Austria and selected CEE markets.

You will implement backend solutions with Java (Spring Boot), build REST APIs, optimize database structures in PostgreSQL/PostGIS and Oracle, and contribute to cloud-ready, service-oriented architectures.

Qualifications

• Several years of professional experience in software engineering and backend development.
• Strong knowledge of Java and modern backend development frameworks (preferably Spring Boot).
• Experience designing and implementing REST APIs and distributed system integrations.
• Strong SQL skills and practical experience with relational databases (Oracle, PostgreSQL).
• Knowledge of database design, query optimisation and performance tuning.
• Experience with Git and modern software development workflows.
• Understanding of software architecture patterns, clean code principles and maintainable system design.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Independent, structured and reliable working style.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
• Nice to have: GIS tech, PostGIS/Oracle Spatial, cloud platforms, Snowflake, microservices architectures.
• German and English: B2 level in professional environment.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain GIS applications and services.
• Implement backend solutions using Java and related technologies following architecture principles and standards.
• Develop and maintain REST APIs, system integrations and data processing services.
• Design and optimise database structures and data integration across PostgreSQL/PostGIS and Oracle.
• Collaborate with Business Analysts and Product Owners to translate requirements into scalable solutions.
• Contribute to cloud-ready, service-oriented GIS architecture and CI/CD processes.
• Support operation, troubleshooting and continuous improvement of GIS applications.
