Job summary

Nutrient is seeking a backend engineer to own database-first design for Document Engine and related services. You will write backend code with a focus on efficient data access, scalable schemas, and minimal round trips.

You’ll work on high-performance Elixir/Phoenix systems, optimize PostgreSQL usage, and collaborate with a small remote-first team to ensure reliability and scalability for customers with large document and annotation volumes.

Qualifications

• Backend services and distributed systems experience.
• Deep PostgreSQL experience: data modeling, indexing, transactions, concurrency.
• Experience fixing N+1 queries and redesigning access patterns.
• Knowledge of PostgreSQL at scale: partitioning, migrations, live troubleshooting.
• Cloud and container deployments (AWS, Kubernetes).
• Strong coding skills; Elixir exposure welcome and learnable.

Responsibilities

• Execute design and implementation of high-performance Elixir/Phoenix-based systems.
• Build features with core focus on efficient DB usage and lean queries.
• Profile queries to remove bottlenecks and improve data access patterns.
• Ensure Document Engine performs well in managed cloud or self-hosted PostgreSQL setups.
• Design and run zero-downtime migrations as data grows.
• Develop AI-native tooling and agent-driven performance investigations.
