Regional Health & Safety Lead (NSW & QLD)

Big River Group is a publicly listed Australian company with over 120 years of heritage in the timber and building materials sector. With a strong national and international footprint, we are recognised for quality, innovation, and customer service across the construction, civil, and building industries.

Overview

Your Role: As the Regional Health & Safety Lead, you will take ownership of WHS strategy and leadership across our NSW & QLD branches. This role will be based at our Crestmead (QLD) office, with regular travel across Queensland, New South Wales, and other states as required. This is a multi-site, high-impact role accountable for embedding Zero Harm as a business priority, not just a compliance requirement.

What You’ll Do
  • Translate Group WHS strategy into clear regional objectives and site-level action plans.
  • Conduct audits, inspections, and governance reviews, ensuring compliance with WHS legislation and ISO standards.
  • Lead investigations into incidents using ICAM (or equivalent) methodologies and manage regulator engagement.
  • Oversee workplace injury response, workers’ compensation, and return-to-work outcomes.
  • Coach and mentor managers to build WHS capability and accountability.
  • Analyse safety performance data, identify trends, and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Act as a visible leader across sites, engaging directly with frontline teams.

This role will be based at one of our regional offices (Sydney or Crestmead), with regular travel across sites.

What You’ll Need
  • Certificate IV or Diploma in Work Health & Safety (minimum).
  • Current First Aid and accredited Return-to-Work Coordinator certification.
  • Minimum 7 years’ WHS leadership experience across multi-site, high-risk industries.
  • Strong knowledge of WHS legislation, codes of practice, and risk management frameworks.
  • Proven ability to influence senior leaders, managers, and frontline employees.
  • Analytical and data-driven, with a pragmatic approach to problem solving.
What You’ll Receive in Return
  • Strategic leadership remit across a multi-site regional portfolio.
  • Competitive salary package with performance incentives.
  • Exposure to executive leadership and direct impact on business outcomes.
  • Career progression and professional development in a publicly listed organisation.
  • Free onsite parking at major branches.
  • A progressive, people-focused culture where safety is at the centre of everything we do.

Notes

Involved in the Australian timber industry since the early 1900’s, Big River adds more value per cubic metre of log throughput than any other operation in the NSW hardwood industry. Established as Australia’s leading formply producer comprising a wide range of locally-made softwood and hardwood formply products, Big River’s range also includes decorative timber products combining the aesthetic value of hardwood timbers with the structural qualities of an engineered product. At Big River, we know our customers.
