Organizational Setting

The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications implements the IAEA's Major Programme 2, "Nuclear Techniques for Development and Environmental Protection". This Major Programme comprises individual programmes on food and agriculture, human health, water resources, environment and radiation technologies. These programmes are supported by laboratories in Seibersdorf, Monaco and Vienna.

The Division of Human Health is organized into four Sections whose objectives are to enhance the capabilities of Member States to address needs related to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of health problems through the development and application of nuclear techniques within a framework of quality assurance.

The Dosimetry and Medical Radiation Physics Section (DMRP) is responsible for quality assurance and metrology in radiation medicine. The Section works closely with clinical colleagues of the Applied Radiation Biology and Radiotherapy Section and the Nuclear Medicine and Diagnostic Imaging Section. Specifically, DMRP provides technical support in medical physics to ensure the safe and effective applications of nuclear technology in radiotherapy, diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine.

Main Purpose

The Quality Manager (Dosimetry Laboratory), under the supervision of the Dosimetry Laboratory (DOL) Head supports implementation of the IAEA's dosimetry services by providing technical support and maintaining the Quality Management System (QMS) documentation.

Role

The Quality Manager (Dosimetry Laboratory) is:

1. a technical specialist on dosimetry instrumentation, calibration and audit methodologies;
2. a coordinator, developing, maintaining and improving the dosimetry laboratory integrated quality and safety management system;
3. a collaborator, contributing to the DOL R&D work;
4. a mentor for scientific visitors and IAEA fellows in dosimetry calibration and audit techniques, and QMS procedures.

Functions / Key Results Expected

1. Coordinate QMS related activities in the Dosimetry Laboratory as DOL Quality Manager.
2. Oversee the implementation of the quality assurance programmes and maintain the DOL QMS, review it for improvement, arrange internal and external audits, maintain records of customer complaints, corrective actions and the risk register.
3. Contribute to the implementation of dosimetry auditing services including quality assurance of data processing and the preparation of reports on audit results.
4. Execute quality control procedures relevant to the reporting of auditing services; analyse results using statistical models; identify deviations and possible causes and trends, and suggest improvements in auditing procedures.
5. Contribute to the DOL R&D work, including testing and maintenance of dosimetry and instrumentation systems and developing new auditing procedures.
6. Provide measurement support to coordinated research projects in dosimetry.
7. Mentor scientific visitors and train IAEA fellows in dosimetry audit and calibration QMS procedures.

The incumbent may perform his/her work in areas involving exposure to radioactive materials. Therefore, as an Occupationally Exposed Worker, he/she must be medically cleared by VIC Medical Service and is subject to an appropriate radiation and health monitoring programme, in accordance with the IAEA's Radiation Safety Regulations.

Required Expertise

• Dosimetry: Knowledge in the principles and practices of radiation dosimetry.
• Medical Physics: Knowledge of calibration, auditing and implementation of dosimetry codes of practice in the clinical environment.
• Dosimetry Quality Management: Knowledge in operation and maintenance of QMS for radiation dosimetry laboratories based on ISO/IEC 17025 standard.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills

• Bachelor's Degree - University degree in Radiation Dosimetry or Medical Radiation Physics. Advanced university degree would be an asset.
• A minimum of five years of relevant work experience in radiation dosimetry.
• Experience in dosimetry and instrumentation systems pertaining to calibration and auditing.
• Experience with Quality Management Systems used in radiation dosimetry.
• Experience as part of a team delivering projects in a relevant area.
• Experience in contributing to research and development projects related to radiation dosimetry.
• Experience in mentoring, teaching or tutoring.
• Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
