Job summary

Transkribus by read-coop sce seeks an experienced systems administrator to keep our Linux-based infrastructure reliable, secure, and scalable from our Austrian location. You will run virtualization (Proxmox VE, KVM), manage backups and disaster recovery, and automate with Ansible and Terraform in a small, seasoned team.

Strong networking, scripting in Bash/Python, and solid English are essential; German is a plus. Occasional travel to Innsbruck for on-site collaboration is expected.

Qualifications

• Several years of production Linux server experience.
• Experience with virtualization (Proxmox VE, KVM or similar).
• Automation and scripting with Ansible, Bash and Python.
• Solid networking knowledge (VLANs, DNS, load balancing, TLS).
• Very good English; German is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Run and develop our virtualization platform (Proxmox VE, Ceph), including upgrades and capacity planning.
• Backup, restore and disaster recovery: design, implementation and regular testing.
• Automation with Ansible and Terraform; patch management for our VMs and containers.
• Monitoring and alerting with Checkmk, Grafana, Prometheus and Loki.
• Run core services together with the team: PostgreSQL, object storage, HAProxy, Keycloak, CI/CD (Jenkins, GitLab).
• IT security: identity and access management, secrets management, handling vulnerabilities.
• Documentation, runbooks and knowledge sharing in the team.
• Support on-premises deliveries of our software (OpenShift/Kubernetes).

Transkribus makes historical documents readable and searchable with AI. More than 500,000 users, from archives and libraries to universities and family historians, have processed over 200 million pages with it. Transkribus runs on our own servers in Austria, and we are looking for someone to keep that infrastructure reliable, secure and ready to grow, together with a small, experienced team.

Your role

• Run and develop our virtualisation platform (Proxmox VE, Ceph), including upgrades and capacity planning
• Backup, restore and disaster recovery: design, implementation and regular testing
• Automation with Ansible and Terraform; patch management for our VMs and containers
• Monitoring and alerting with Checkmk, Grafana, Prometheus and Loki
• Run core services together with the team: PostgreSQL, object storage (SeaweedFS, MinIO), HAProxy, Keycloak, CI/CD (Jenkins, GitLab)
• IT security: identity and access management, secrets management, handling vulnerabilities
• Documentation, runbooks and knowledge sharing in the team
• Support on-premises deliveries of our software (OpenShift/Kubernetes)

Your profile

• A completed technical education (HTL, university or university of applied sciences) or equivalent professional experience
• Several years of experience running Linux servers (Debian/Ubuntu) in production
• Experience with virtualisation (Proxmox VE, KVM or similar)
• Experience with automation (Ansible or similar) and scripting (Bash, Python)
• Solid networking knowledge (VLANs, firewalls, DNS, load balancing, TLS)
• A structured, independent way of working and a strong sense of responsibility
• Very good English (the working language of the team); German is a plus

Nice to have: Ceph, S3-compatible object storage, Terraform, running PostgreSQL, GPU servers (NVIDIA), Kubernetes/OpenShift, ISO/IEC 27001 or NIS2

The minimum salary for this position under the Austrian collective agreement for IT services (IT-KV, ST2, entry level) is EUR 4,061 gross per month (14 payments a year) for 38.5 hours per week, pro rata for part-time. With three or more years of relevant experience, the minimum is EUR 4,611. We are prepared to pay more depending on qualifications and experience.
