Overview

The MTCD Language Services Section (LSS) coordinates, manages and delivers language services for the IAEA. The Department of Management (MT) provides a platform of services supporting the IAEA’s scientific and technical programmes, including recruitment support, procurement coordination, and timely translation and distribution of Board documents to Member States. The IAEA aims to foster the exchange of scientific and technical information and knowledge in the nuclear field among Member States.

To facilitate effective exchange and dissemination of information, the Division of Conference and Document Services coordinates and supports meetings and conferences, issues documents in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish, and edits, prints and distributes publications.

Talent Pipeline: This announcement enhances the Agency’s roster of specialized language specialists (translators, revisers, editors and précis-writers). Under the guidance of the Language Service Head, the incumbent translates or revises a range of texts, edits documents, and/or drafts official records of Policy-Making Organ meetings in the fields of nuclear technology and applications, nuclear safety and security, safeguards and verifications, physics and engineering.

Talent Pipeline and Employment Model

The talent pipeline is open to enable language specialists to express interest in freelance employment with the IAEA. Expressions of interest are reviewed by responsible officers with the aim of sourcing candidates for temporary or freelance, home-based opportunities. The engagement duration may be ongoing. Contractual hiring will follow UN system rules and, where appropriate, the AITC Agreement, with compensation policies applying per contract type (short-term or paid-per-word).

Role: Language Specialist – Talent Profile

The language specialist provides accurate, timely, and stylistically appropriate translations/revisions from Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish into English, or from English into the above languages. They edit for consistency of style and terminology and may draft official records of Policy-Making Organ meetings. Occasionally, translations from German or other languages into English may be required. Work may be checked in-house before final distribution to Member States and/or Secretariat. Access to relevant reference material and the IAEA terminology database (IAEAterm) is provided.

  • Translate a broad range of administrative, legal, scientific and technical texts to ensure translations are equivalent in meaning and style to the original content (English into Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish, or from those languages and German and others into English).
  • Edit a broad range of administrative, legal, scientific and technical content.
  • Draft summary records of official Policy-Making Organ (PMO) meetings.
  • Research terminology to assist in developing the central terminology database.
  • Perform other linguistic duties as required.
Education, Experience and Language Skills
  • University degree in languages or a related field; degrees in other fields will be considered, as appropriate.
  • Excellent oral and written command of official United Nations languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish) with strong grammar, style and usage; knowledge of other languages is essential.
  • Relevant experience in translating, revising, editing and/or drafting scientific and technical texts into these languages, specifically in the nuclear field and/or in an international organization, is a strong asset.
  • Attach a ~three-page sample of work in the source and target languages, indicating the types of work done and the organizations for which the work was produced.
  • Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office and IT translation tools, particularly Trados Studio and Multiterm, is required.
  • Familiarity with the IAEA and its operations is an asset.
