Organizational context:

The Data, Analytics and Statistics Section (DASS) within the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is responsible for collecting and processing data on illicit drugs and crime. The section produces estimates for flagship publications and mandated reports, covering international statistics on crime, criminal justice, and drugs, contributing to Sustainable Development Goals monitoring. This internship is based at UNODC headquarters in Vienna.

Job purpose:

This internship offers a valuable opportunity to contribute to the Data, Analytics and Statistics Section (DASS) at UNODC. The role involves assisting in the collection, validation, and analysis of international data related to drugs and crime. The intern will support the production of statistical products, including datasets and estimates for key UNODC publications and reports. This position is crucial for generating evidence-based knowledge on drugs and crime, supporting methodological development, and contributing to the monitoring of Sustainable Development Goals. The intern will gain practical experience in data analysis, research, and report drafting within a global context, supporting the section's mandate to provide accurate and timely statistical information.

Responsibilities:

The intern will assist in background research and review data collection instruments and methodological guidelines. Key duties include analyzing trends in time-series data on drugs and crime using internal and external databases. The role involves collecting information from various sources, conducting research, and preparing statistical products and inputs for UNODC reports, documents, and regional studies. Additionally, the intern will support the organization of international workshops and meetings focused on data related to drugs and crime. The position requires carrying out other relevant assignments as needed, contributing to the overall work of the Data Analytics and Statistics Section.

Education:

Applicants must be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), or be in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). Fluency in spoken and written English is required. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is advantageous.

Work experience:

While professional work experience is not required for UN internships, a field of study closely related to the internship is essential. Studies in social sciences, criminology, epidemiology, statistics, economics, data science, information technology, mathematics, or equivalent are required. Some experience in research on crime or drugs, or a comparable study area, would be an asset.

Skills:

Computer literacy in standard software applications, with essential working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Desirable knowledge includes R, Python, Stata, and MS Access. Demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a commitment to its ideals. Ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
