Responsibilities

We are looking for a Senior Research Associate to join the New York office of Bernstein’s premier US Pharma and Biotechnology Equity Research team in New York. If you have a passion for research and are interested in building a long-term career in the investing world, there’s no better place to start than Bernstein. We seek candidates who love to solve problems, analyze data, and are passionate about in-depth fundamental analysis. We offer a unique opportunity to become an industry expert as you work alongside a seasoned veteran who will mentor and develop you.

Our Senior Research Associates play an important role in producing the research Bernstein is famous for: unbiased, thematic, collaborative, data-driven, and always differentiated. You will develop relationships across the investing community and over time become a thought partner for our clients. You will work closely with your team but come to have a high degree of autonomy and independence.

As a Senior Research Associate, you will:

  1. Become an industry expert working one-on-one with a Senior Analyst who often has 10-15 years of prior industry experience in consulting and/or management roles.
  2. Become highly proficient at in-depth analysis of your companies, stocks, and industry themes.
  3. Author highly differentiated written research that is famous for its deep industry insights and quantitative frameworks, including our signature Blackbook product.
  4. Become adept at financial forecasting, including building detailed forward-looking models.
  5. Build strong relationships across the investing community including our sales and trading teams and institutional clients.
  6. Build a network within your industry including senior managements of your companies.
  7. Act as team COO and actively manage your franchise’s workflow.

We have an outstanding Associate program and make a strong commitment to your development. Our culture is intellectually rigorous, but it is also very collegial and fun. We have robust learning and development programs as well as annual offsite events. We offer a flexible work schedule, but our in-office environment is very active. Our Associates are highly involved in (and often lead) our firm’s cultural initiatives, ranging from health & wellness, community service, mentoring, employee resource groups, social events, and Associate leadership.

If you love solving problems and analyzing data, Bernstein could be a great fit for you. We provide an intellectually challenging but supportive environment for careers in investment research. These are typically three-to-five-year positions with outstanding growth potential. Our Associate positions have historically been excellent platforms for advancement to Vice President and Senior Analyst roles. We additionally have many Associates go on to successful investing careers at our clients.

The role is eligible for an annual discretionary bonus and includes a competitive benefits package including 401(k) plan with company match, Medical/Dental/Vision, and other benefits for fertility, wellness, student loans and commuters.

Profile required

Our Senior Research Associates typically possess the following qualifications:

Basic

  1. Excellent broad-based analytical skills.
  2. Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  3. Strong quantitative backgrounds and ability to work with data sets.
  4. Relentless intellectual curiosity – our signature strength.
  5. Bachelor’s degree.

Preferred

  1. MD or PhD focused in life science (biology, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, etc.); advanced degree in finance/business also acceptable if candidate has other demonstrated interest or experience in life science.
  2. Experience analyzing companies in the health care sector, ideally therapeutics.
  3. Organic leadership and an entrepreneurial mindset.

Please include your cumulative GPA and test scores (ACT/SAT/GMAT/GRE) on your resume. We look forward to learning more about you!
