Job summary

AVL seeks a Department Manager for Multiphysics CFD Simulation to lead an international team and shape next‑generation flow simulation for vehicle development. You will drive R&D projects, advance digital engineering methods and collaborate with customers, research partners and universities.

You will expand the team, manage budgeting, and ensure strategic direction of CFD/CAE methods while leveraging HPC technologies and cross‑department collaboration.

Qualifications

• Completed technical education with a focus on vehicle development, mechanical, electrical engineering or a comparable field.
• At least 10 years of professional experience in CFD simulation and development of flow simulation methods.
• Experience in managing employees and international cross-location teams.
• Experience in digital product development from concept to SOP and transferring results to industrial development processes.
• Very good knowledge of CFD tools such as AVL FIRE, ANSYS Fluent and STAR-CCM+ and programming/scripting.

• Technical and disciplinary management of the Multiphysics CFD Simulation team and international development team members.
• Budgeting and cost monitoring, including resource planning.
• Expanding the customer network for the developed simulation methods and overseeing technical content in project acquisition.
• Managing R&D projects for advancing flow simulation methods and their industrial application.
• Developing CFD/CAE methods, AI-assisted simulation approaches and digital engineering processes.
• Overseeing HPC/cluster technologies and license management in cooperation with Central IT and other departments.

Job Description

As Department Manager Multiphysics CFD Simulation, you will take over the technical and disciplinary management of an international team of experts and shape the further development of innovative solutions in the field of flow simulation for the vehicle development of tomorrow. With your technical expertise and leadership experience, you will develop your team in a targeted manner, drive forward-looking research and development projects and shape the strategic orientation of innovative simulation methods and digital engineering technologies. At the same time, you will expand international networks and represent AVL in your technical field to customers, research partners and expert committees.

Your Responsibilities

• Technical and disciplinary management as well as competence development of the "Multiphysics CFD Simulation" team and the assigned international development team members
• Responsibility for personnel, competency and resource planning, including budgeting and cost monitoring
• Establishment and expansion of the customer network for the simulation methods developed in the specialist team as well as responsibility for the technical content in project acquisition
• Management of research and strategic development projects for the further development of innovative flow simulation methods and their industrial application
• Responsibility for the strategic development of CFD/CAE methods, AI-supported simulation approaches and digital engineering processes
• Management of the further development of HPC/cluster technologies and simulation software licenses in close cooperation with AVL Central IT and other departments, in particular DAO - CFD Simulation
• Representation of AVL through international publications and conference contributions as well as through cooperation with universities and research institutions, including the supervision of master's theses and internships as well as the identification, research and integration of new methods in the field of flow simulation

Profile Description

• Completed technical education (University, University of Applied Sciences) with a focus on vehicle development, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or a comparable field
• At least 10 years of professional experience in the field of CFD simulation as well as in-depth expertise in the development, validation and industrial application of flow simulation methods
• Several years of experience in the technical and disciplinary management of employees as well as international and cross-location teams
• Experience in digital product development from the concept phase to series production (SOP) as well as in the transfer of new simulation methods and research results into industrial development processes
• Sound knowledge in the field of fluid mechanics, heat transfer as well as numerical methods and solution methods of flow simulation
• Very good knowledge of common CFD tools such as AVL FIRE, ANSYS Fluent and STAR-CCM+ as well as experience in programming, automating and further developing simulation processes (e.g. Python, scripting)
• Strong entrepreneurial thinking and acting as well as high communication, organizational, leadership and networking skills
• Willingness to travel for occasional business trips worldwide
• Business fluent knowledge in English, very good knowledge of German is an advantage

Annual Remuneration

Due to the Austrian Equal Treatment Act we are obligated to state the annual gross remuneration (full-time) for this position as a basis for negotiation: €110,000.00. The Employee will be classified according to the Collective Agreement for Employees of Industry (Collective Bargaining Agreement of the Automotive Industry). We will, in any case, offer market-conforming payment taking qualifications and professional experience into account.
