Welding Supervisor – Offshore Fabrication and Shipbuilding Projects

What Does a Welding Supervisor Do?
- Plan welding activities including manpower, consumables, equipment, and compliance with Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS)
- Lead pre-job preparations including job sequencing, material verification, and equipment readiness
- Monitor welding parameters during operations and ensure adherence to project standards for current, voltage, interpass temperature, and back gouging
- Supervise preheating, PWHT (Post Weld Heat Treatment), and ensure NDT is performed per the applicable specifications
- Ensure traceability of welds, consumables, and welder certifications as per ISO 3834-2 and project-specific requirements
- Coordinate dimensional control and fit-up inspections and guide teams toward optimal welding fit
- Review and update project documentation including reports, productivity logs, and welding records
- Assist with training, development, and performance evaluation of welders and junior supervisors
- Support planning departments in developing manpower forecasts, project completion schedules, and progress tracking
- Liaise with project management, quality control, and clients to resolve issues and ensure timely project completion
What Are the Key Responsibilities?
- Execute daily welding activities in alignment with fabrication schedules and quality requirements
- Implement welding procedures according to international standards including AWS, ASME, ISO, and DNVGL codes
- Conduct audits, risk assessments, and participate in continuous improvement and NCR tracking
- Supervise offshore structure, shipyard modules, and pressure vessel fabrication from start to finish
- Collaborate across departments to streamline welding productivity and ensure quality control standards
- Provide regular feedback on progress and assist in field invoicing and estimator coordination
What Skills Are Needed for a Welding Supervisor in Dubai?
Education and Certifications:
- Diploma in Engineering or equivalent
- International Welding Specialist (IWS) certification (ISO 14731) or equivalent
- CSWIP 3.1 or 3.2 / AWS CWI / API 570 preferred
- Additional training in offshore welding, NDT Level 2, RTFI, or IWE is advantageous
Experience:
- Minimum 8 years in oil & gas or newbuilding projects with at least 5 years in a shipyard supervisory role
- Strong background in WPS, PQR, and consumables control
- Familiarity with stress relieving, heat treatment, and welding metallurgy
Technical Skills:
- Proficient in MS Office, basic planning, and project reporting tools
- Thorough understanding of international welding standards such as AWS D1.1, ASME VIII/IX, ISO 9606, ISO 15614
- Knowledge of NDT techniques and offshore fabrication requirements
Soft Skills:
- Leadership and team coordination capabilities
- Detail-oriented with strong communication and documentation skills
- Ability to manage multiple welding teams and ensure adherence to safety and quality standards
