Role Context
The Urban Designer - Master Planning will support the planning and design of complex urban developments from early concept through detailed master planning and design coordination. The position requires an understanding of how buildings, public spaces, movement networks, landscape, infrastructure, land use, and community needs interact within an urban environment. The designer will work with architects, planners, engineers, landscape specialists, transportation professionals, and clients to create development frameworks that are functional, sustainable, commercially viable, and responsive to local planning requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop urban design concepts and spatial frameworks for residential, commercial, mixed-use, and large-scale development projects.
- Prepare master plans that define land use, development parcels, movement networks, public spaces, density, massing, and urban structure.
- Conduct site analysis covering access, surrounding development, environmental conditions, infrastructure constraints, topography, and development opportunities.
- Contribute to feasibility studies and early-stage planning assessments that guide project direction.
- Produce detailed urban design plans, development frameworks, design guidelines, and supporting technical documentation.
- Translate planning principles and client requirements into practical and visually compelling development concepts.
- Create high-quality diagrams, plans, models, visualizations, and presentations for internal and client reviews.
- Use AutoCAD, SketchUp, ArcGIS, Revit, and related digital design tools to develop and communicate urban proposals.
- Analyze demographic information, development trends, market considerations, and site conditions to inform design decisions.
- Coordinate closely with landscape architects, transportation planners, infrastructure engineers, sustainability consultants, and architectural teams.
- Integrate pedestrian movement, accessibility, mobility, open space, landscape, and public realm considerations into master plans.
- Review design proposals against UAE planning requirements, zoning regulations, municipal guidance, and applicable development standards.
- Participate in meetings and workshops with clients, government representatives, consultants, and project stakeholders.
- Prepare design presentations and clearly communicate the reasoning behind planning and urban design recommendations.
- Support multidisciplinary coordination to resolve conflicts between planning, infrastructure, transportation, landscape, and architectural requirements.
- Maintain consistency and technical accuracy across drawings, reports, design guidelines, and presentation materials.
- Monitor emerging urban development practices, digital design technologies, and sustainable planning approaches relevant to regional projects.
Ideal Profile
- Bachelor 's degree in Architecture, Urban Planning, Urban Design, or a related discipline.
- 3-5 years of professional experience in urban design, master planning, or closely related development work.
- Demonstrated experience preparing master plans for residential, commercial, or mixed-use developments.
- Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD, SketchUp, ArcGIS, and Revit.
- Strong understanding of urban planning principles, development controls, zoning regulations, and design standards.
- Practical knowledge of sustainable urban design and environmentally responsive development.
- Ability to interpret site constraints and transform analytical information into coherent design solutions.
- Experience preparing diagrams, plans, visualizations, design guidelines, and client presentations.
- Strong graphical communication and spatial design capability.
