Role Context

The Teacher - Science Maternity Cover will provide continuity of high-quality science teaching while supporting the academic priorities and wider educational culture of Yasmina British Academy. The role requires more than subject delivery: the teacher will create challenging learning experiences, monitor individual progress, respond to assessment evidence, support students with different abilities, and contribute to departmental and academy-wide improvement. Working within an established English Curriculum school, the teacher will help students develop scientific knowledge, analytical thinking, practical understanding, and independent study habits. Consistent classroom expectations, careful use of performance data, safeguarding awareness, and effective collaboration with colleagues and families will be central to maintaining strong outcomes during the maternity cover period.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver well-structured science lessons with clear objectives, measurable outcomes, and appropriate levels of challenge.
  • Create a classroom climate that supports outstanding learning, curiosity, participation, and responsible student behaviour.
  • Translate curriculum requirements into lessons that progressively build scientific knowledge, practical skills, subject vocabulary, and conceptual understanding.
  • Set ambitious learning targets based on prior attainment and regularly review progress against those expectations.
  • Identify students requiring additional support as well as highly able learners who need greater academic challenge.
  • Differentiated instruction: Differentiate teaching using assessment evidence, performance data, learning needs, and individual student capabilities.
  • Maintain an appropriate pace during lessons while balancing explanation, questioning, independent work, practical activity, assessment, and student discussion.
  • Use varied teaching techniques to structure complex scientific information and communicate important concepts clearly.
  • Apply effective questioning strategies to check understanding, identify misconceptions, and encourage students to explain scientific reasoning.
  • Select suitable textbooks, laboratory resources, ICT tools, digital learning technologies, library materials, and other instructional resources.
  • Help students develop independent research, study, revision, and examination skills alongside subject knowledge.
  • Ensure appropriate coverage of programmes of study and maintain accurate curriculum records.
  • Mark and monitor student work consistently and provide useful targets that guide further improvement.
  • Assessment will be integrated into everyday teaching rather than treated as a separate activity. The teacher will systematically record student achievement, examine strengths and areas requiring development, and use these findings to adjust planning.
  • Complete assessments required by examination bodies, the science department, and academy procedures.
  • Maintain reliable records showing student attainment, completion of work, understanding of key concepts, and progress over time.
  • Prepare clear and informative progress reports for parents and provide constructive feedback during Parent Teacher Consultations.
  • Evaluate teaching practice critically and make practical adjustments where changes could improve learning effectiveness.
  • Follow academy procedures governing behaviour, homework, punctuality, classroom expectations, and quality of student work.
  • Maintain safe working practices and comply with applicable health and safety requirements, including responsibilities associated with science learning environments.
  • Complete required safeguarding, child protection, health and safety, and academy improvement training.
  • Participate in staff briefings, department meetings, professional development activities, and performance management processes.
  • Contribute to subject development plans with clear objectives, improvement priorities, and measurable success criteria.
  • Work constructively with colleagues to share teaching materials, facilities, specialist resources, and effective classroom practices.
  • Participate in academy improvement planning and contribute to the wider strategic direction of Yasmina British Academy.
  • Support Open Evenings, Parent Teacher Consultations, academy events, community activities, and liaison initiatives with partner schools.
  • Contribute positively to extracurricular provision and the broader academic and social life of the academy.
Ideal Profile

Applicants should hold a bachelor 's degree in Education or another relevant academic discipline together with a recognized teaching qualification. A minimum of two years of experience teaching the specialist subject is preferred. Experience delivering science up to GCSE and A Level would be particularly valuable, although it is not essential. The successful candidate should understand how to teach students for whom English is not their first language and be able to adapt scientific explanations without reducing academic expectations. A strong interest in educating the whole child is essential. The academy is looking for a teacher who combines subject knowledge with concern for student wellbeing, personal development, confidence, and long-term achievement. Candidates should demonstrate professional conduct, thoughtful classroom judgment, constructive teamwork, and recent involvement in extracurricular activities. The position requires respect for colleagues and students from varied cultural and personal backgrounds together with a positive, practical approach to solving everyday educational challenges. Appointment will be subject to satisfactory references and a clean enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check or appropriate police clearance.
