The Biology Teacher will combine high-quality classroom instruction with broader responsibility for curriculum standards, student performance and departmental development. The position requires an experienced practitioner who can use subject expertise and performance evidence to improve outcomes while ensuring that Biology provision remains challenging, inclusive and academically coherent. A key business impact of the role is maintaining strong academic performance by identifying underachievement early and converting assessment evidence into targeted action. Curriculum planning must provide continuity and progression while addressing the needs of SEN, students of determination, gifted and talented, EAL and high-achieving learners. The position also carries leadership responsibilities involving teaching quality, staff performance, resources and departmental budgets. Through effective coordination and collaborative leadership, the teacher will help maintain consistent standards across classroom delivery, examination preparation and enrichment activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver challenging and engaging Biology teaching aligned with English National Curriculum expectations.
  • Establish high standards for student attainment, scientific understanding and classroom practice.
  • Develop departmental policies and practices that reflect the Academy 's educational priorities.
  • Translate school objectives into short, medium and long-term subject development plans.
  • Monitor progress against departmental priorities and adjust improvement actions when required.
  • Use attainment and assessment data to identify students who are underachieving.
  • Design targeted interventions that address learning gaps and accelerate student progress.
  • Analyze school and departmental performance data to support improvement planning.
  • Contribute evidence and analysis to relevant school self-evaluation processes.
  • Develop and regularly review schemes of work across applicable year groups and courses.
  • Ensure curriculum plans provide appropriate support for SEN, students of determination, gifted and talented and EAL learners.
  • Maintain curriculum coverage, continuity and progression across Biology provision.
  • Provide suitable challenge for high-ability students and appropriate intervention for students requiring additional support.
  • Set clear expectations for teaching quality, achievement and student behaviour.
  • Evaluate classroom teaching and learning to identify effective practice and improvement priorities.
  • Implement practical actions that strengthen the quality and consistency of subject delivery.
  • Prepare students effectively for relevant external examinations.
  • Support I-GCSE and IB Diploma booster and revision sessions.
  • Contribute to the school 's CAS Programme and wider enrichment activities.
  • Encourage students to connect biological concepts with investigation, evidence and real-world scientific applications.
  • Use performance information to set meaningful student targets and monitor subsequent progress.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to improve curriculum planning, teaching strategies and assessment practice.
  • Share effective approaches that help close attainment gaps.
  • Support professional development and performance management within the department.
  • Manage team performance in accordance with school procedures where assigned.
  • Deploy staff and learning resources efficiently according to curriculum priorities.
  • Manage departmental resources responsibly and ensure appropriate availability for teaching.
  • Maintain effective oversight of Resource and CapEx budgets.
  • Identify equipment and resource requirements and prioritize expenditure according to educational need.
  • Use teaching spaces to create stimulating, safe and effective learning environments.
  • Contribute actively to the Academy 's extensive enrichment programme.
  • Maintain safeguarding responsibilities and promote the welfare of children and young people.
Ideal Profile

Candidates should hold a bachelor 's degree in Biology or a closely related subject together with a PGCE or another recognized teaching qualification.
