Role Context

The Humanities Teacher is responsible for creating purposeful learning experiences that help students understand societies, cultures, historical developments and the wider world. The role requires strong subject knowledge together with the ability to make humanities content relevant, challenging and accessible to learners with different abilities and language backgrounds. Working within Yas American Academy, the teacher will contribute to curriculum planning, assessment, student wellbeing and extracurricular life. The position also requires close collaboration with colleagues and parents so that academic progress, classroom expectations and individual learning needs are addressed consistently.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver high-quality humanities lessons aligned with curriculum requirements.
  • Create engaging learning experiences that encourage inquiry, analysis and independent thinking.
  • Differentiate teaching to meet the needs of students across a wide range of abilities.
  • Organize classroom resources and displays to support an effective learning environment.
  • Motivate students through imaginative teaching approaches and relevant humanities content.
  • Take responsibility for the academic progress of assigned classes.
  • Observe, assess and record student development in accordance with school expectations.
  • Use Target Tracker and other assessment information to monitor progress.
  • Apply assessment data to refine planning, adjust provision and identify required interventions.
  • Provide constructive feedback that helps students understand strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Communicate student progress and wellbeing clearly to parents and carers.
  • Participate in Parent Teacher Conferences and other formal meetings when required.
  • Establish positive and respectful relationships with students.
  • Apply the school 's behaviour policy consistently and fairly.
  • Maintain high expectations for conduct, independence and personal responsibility.
  • Adapt classroom management approaches to individual student needs.
  • Work collaboratively with fellow teachers when planning curriculum content and learning activities.
  • Contribute to curriculum action groups focused on planning, assessment, resources and special events.
  • Work constructively with curriculum support staff where additional student assistance is required.
  • Liaise with speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and educational psychologists when necessary.
  • Embed Yas American Academy Teacher and Learner DNA expectations throughout classroom practice.
  • Use CPOMS and other approved school systems to support communication and student wellbeing processes.
  • Maintain regular and professional communication with parents and carers.
  • Support school events, trips, activities and enrichment opportunities.
  • Participate in activities that may occasionally take place during evenings or weekends.
  • Lead a weekly extracurricular activity during each term.
  • Contribute positively to the broader life, values and culture of the Academy.
  • Reflect on lesson effectiveness and adjust teaching approaches based on student outcomes.
  • Collaborate flexibly with colleagues across departments to support whole-school priorities.
Ideal Profile

Candidates should hold a bachelor 's degree in a relevant humanities subject together with a B.Ed. or PGCE qualification. Applicants should have previous experience teaching AP, IB or A-Levels standard courses. Experience gained within an international school environment will be an advantage. The successful candidate should demonstrate strong humanities subject knowledge and the ability to translate complex concepts into engaging and age-appropriate learning experiences. Previous experience teaching students for whom English is not their first language is important in a diverse international school environment. Candidates should be committed to educating the whole child and demonstrate a professional approach to student wellbeing, safeguarding and inclusive practice. Recent involvement in extracurricular activities is also expected, together with a willingness to contribute to school events and wider enrichment opportunities. A positive, solution-focused attitude and respect for all members of the school community are essential.
