Job description

Job Purpose
The Staff Nurse is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care. The Staff Nurse supports professional nursing practice across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. The Staff Nurse will understand, support and promote the mission, vision and values of SSMC; provides age-appropriate patient care according to the Nursing Scope of Practice as defined by the regulatory body. The Staff Nurse will adhere to and promote the Professional Nurses Code of Conduct for Abu Dhabi and UAE.

Unit-Specific Job Roles

  • Demonstrates competence with the care, assessment and management of patients in multi-organ failure including the prevention of complications.
  • Demonstrates competence with the care and assessment of patients in sepsis and septic shock, and multi-organ failure including the prevention of complications.
  • Implements the sepsis pathway with the multidisciplinary team and demonstrates knowledge in the nurses role within this pathway.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and competence with the care and management of ventilated patients including the prevention of complications.
  • Demonstrates knowledge on invasive hemodynamic monitoring.
  • Demonstrates knowledge on the medications indications, contra-indications, effect and side effects, i: e inotropic support, vasopressors and sedation.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and competence with the care and management of patients requiring CRRT including the prevention of complications.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and competence of the prevention of Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP) and is consistently compliant with VAP bundles.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and competence of the prevention of Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infections (CLABSI) and is consistently compliant with CLABSI bundles.
  • Demonstrates competence in administering intravenous fluids and medications as per Physicians order.
  • Monitor patients fluid intake and output to detect emerging problems such as fluid and electrolyte imbalances.
  • Monitor all aspects of patient care, including diet, physical activity and wound care.
  • Assist physicians with procedures such as bronchoscopy, endoscopy, endotracheal intubation, and elective cardioversion.
  • Ensure that equipment or devices are properly disinfected and stored after use.
  • Collaborating with the MDT critical care team.
  • Assess patients pain levels and sedation requirements.
  • Prioritize nursing care for assigned critically ill patients based on assessment data and identified needs.
  • Providing education and support to patient families.
