Responsibilities

Role Context

The Specialist - Pulmonology and Respiratory Care will provide comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up for patients with respiratory and pulmonary disorders across outpatient and inpatient services. The role combines clinical respiratory medicine with diagnostic procedures, bronchoscopy, pulmonary function interpretation, and management of patients requiring oxygen therapy or non-invasive ventilation. Close collaboration with intensive care, internal medicine, thoracic surgery, radiology, and other specialties will support timely diagnosis and improved respiratory outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

• Diagnose and manage acute and chronic respiratory diseases across a broad patient population.
• Provide specialist care for asthma and other obstructive airway conditions.
• Evaluate and treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and related complications.
• Manage pneumonia and other respiratory infections using evidence-based treatment protocols.
• Assess patients with interstitial lung disease and pulmonary fibrosis.
• Diagnose and manage sleep-related breathing disorders within the specialist scope of practice.
• Conduct comprehensive respiratory assessments including medical history, physical examination, and risk evaluation.
• Request and interpret pulmonary function tests to assess airflow limitation, lung volumes, and respiratory impairment.
• Review chest radiographs, CT imaging, and other relevant thoracic investigations.
• Interpret arterial blood gas results in patients with acute or chronic respiratory compromise.
• Perform bronchoscopy and other pulmonary procedures within approved clinical privileges.
• Interpret bronchoscopic findings and coordinate additional investigations where required.
• Develop individualized treatment plans according to diagnosis, disease severity, comorbidities, and patient needs.
• Monitor response to therapy and modify respiratory treatment when clinically indicated.
• Manage patients requiring supplemental oxygen therapy.
• Provide clinical management for suitable patients requiring non-invasive ventilation.
• Recognize respiratory deterioration and arrange timely escalation to intensive care or other higher-acuity services.
• Collaborate with intensivists in the management of patients with severe respiratory failure.
• Coordinate complex pulmonary cases with internal medicine physicians, thoracic surgeons, radiologists, and other specialists.
• Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions for challenging respiratory conditions.
• Educate patients and families about chronic disease management, medication adherence, inhaler technique, and warning symptoms.
• Provide smoking cessation counselling and preventive respiratory health education.
• Advise patients regarding lifestyle modifications that may improve respiratory function and disease control.
• Maintain accurate consultation notes, procedural documentation, investigation results, and follow-up plans.
• Ensure compliance with DHA requirements, hospital policies, infection control measures, and patient safety standards.
• Participate in clinical audits, service evaluation, quality improvement initiatives, and continuing medical education.
• Maintain current knowledge of advances in respiratory medicine, bronchoscopy, pulmonary diagnostics, and respiratory support.

Ideal Profile

• MBBS or an equivalent recognized medical degree.
• Master 's Degree, MD, DNB, or equivalent specialist qualification in Pulmonology or Respiratory Medicine.
• DHA Eligibility Letter, active DHA License, or eligibility to obtain appropriate Specialist licensing in Dubai.
• Minimum 3-5 years of post-specialization experience as a Specialist Pulmonologist.
• Previous experience within a reputable hospital or multispecialty healthcare facility is preferred.
• Strong expertise in acute and chronic respiratory disease management.
• Demonstrated experience managing asthma, COPD, pneumonia, interstitial lung disease, and pulmonary fibrosis.
• Practical competence in bronchoscopy and pulmonary diagnostic procedures.
• Strong ability to interpret pulmonary function testing.
• Experience managing patients requiring oxygen therapy and non-invasive respiratory support.
• Ability to recognize and stabilize critical respiratory presentations.
• Fellowship or advanced training in Interventional Pulmonology is advantageous.
• Additional training or experience in Sleep Medicine is desirable.
• Valid BLS and ACLS certifications are preferred.
• Strong diagnostic reasoning and clinical decision-making skills.
• Excellent communication and patient counselling abilities.
• Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
• Strong clinical documentation and organizational skills.
