Senior Urban Designer

The Senior Professional role includes design development, design review, supervision of other professionals, coordination, design documentation, and report writing. The Senior Urban Designer guides junior professionals and independently performs all the tasks necessary to complete design works, contributing to strategy and innovation discussions regarding delivery methodologies, including solutions for complex challenging customer/market needs. Contributes to developing project outcomes and coordinating the team to effectively manage the resourcing and delivery of our deliverables as agreed with the Director and clients.

Technical Excellence:

• Identify relevant market research objectives and topics in line with project briefs and internal thought leadership.
• Review and derive necessary information for projects before use and discussions with clients.
• Read, qualify, quantify, and graphically represent urban design standards applicable to projects and apply the same to design tasks. Determine the correct source of planning and urban design regulatory guidelines per region or authority and present key findings to senior urban designers and peers.
• Fully develop the design content by applying design and technical knowledge to ensure the production of high-quality outputs by following project timelines.
• Participate in the interdisciplinary reviews of project deliverables and work on detailed or routine assignments involving calculations, sketching, diagrams, dataset development, drawing, and reports. Identify discrepancies in results and propose an approach to solving new problems encountered.
• Perform work under the agreed-upon budget and schedule with moderate supervision.
• Coordinate with other disciplines or business lines as applicable to ensure the continuity of the design process.
• Understand the impact of integrating the work of other internal disciplines or external consultants/stakeholders in the design sequence as well as the output of the deliverables.
• Adequately represent site reviews, opportunities, and constraints for project and client discussions.
• Question thoughts and validate design ideas following thorough reading of site characteristics.
• Drive and conduct site opportunity and constraints studies for projects and proposals to be presented to the client and internally. Present findings and establish clear thoughts and ideas following design consideration.
• Demonstrate knowledge of urban design principles with the ability to translate vision frameworks established by senior staff into principles and objectives.
• Manage teams to prepare urban design project deliverables and applicable planning authorities requirements and coordinate technical input and output with various disciplines into a project or a proposal.
• Have a fair understanding of a project's fully integrated urban design technical requirements and can bridge between Architecture, Urban Design, and Landscape scopes.
• Define urban design and building typologies applicable to projects and be able to benchmark them against international and local examples.
• Demonstrate clear descriptive writing of urban design principles and urban design guidelines.
• Think in a 3-dimensional manner and be able to represent ideas verbally and graphically.
• Acquire strong knowledge of urban design attributes used across urban Design projects.
• Develop innovative design ideas and solutions through digital tools and personal skills.
• Identify new potential areas of innovation and improvement in design ideation and presentation from which the urban design team can benefit.
• Actively participate in internal and external workshops and can put together summary outcome reports.
• Able to lead teams of designers to prepare adequate material for workshops and client presentations by following design managers' storylines.

Team Contribution:

• Structure teams for urban design projects with a clear understanding of project roles and responsibilities.
• Communicate with peers and ensure knowledge sharing occurs across the various studios and teams around lessons learnt.
• Orient, integrate, guide, and mentor new urban design recruits and provide them with access to the relevant sample material and projects.
• Be an advocate of quality procedures applicable to the urban design technical practice group and continuously apply thorough self-checks and reviews of deliverables before they are shared.
• Implement safety in design standards and procedures and report on safety inside and outside the work environment, including any incidents or near misses that might impact staff.
• Contribute to and participate in one of the UP steering committees that promote integration, knowledge sharing, digital integration, or diversity and inclusion.
• Report on safety issues observed in and outside the office during duty including near misses.
• Be a gatekeeper of information and methodologies, deliver reports and projects, and share with the wider team and new joiners when needed.
• Enhance standards of developed urban design graphics across projects and document the same for broader team use.

Client Relationship Management:

• Begin to build and maintain client relationships.
• Attend client meetings as technical support to gather information, discuss project requirements, explain/defend work, etc.
• Participate in the development and preparation of bids and proposals; the ability to present solutions to clients professionally and technically competently.
• Understand bid requirements and can support putting together bids, technical approach, and methodologies while supporting delivery structure, coordinating input, and implementing commercial aspects of bids.

Qualifications:

• Post Graduate Degree in Masterplanning/ Urban Design
• A minimum of 6 years of Post Graduate Experience
• Working Experience outside the Middle East
• A strong understanding of Urban Systems and dependencies with allied disciplines. Experience of delivering multidisciplinary projects would be beneficial.
• Creative and adept at translating complex ideas into clear compelling visuals and reports
• Showcase instances of leading key projects/tasks and managing small teams
• Proficiency in Design and Geospatial Tools
• Computational Design capabilities are desirable
• Sketching and Drawing skills are desirable
