Job summary

Core42 is seeking a Senior Software Engineer (Backend) in Abu Dhabi to architect, scale, and maintain backend services powering our sovereign AI platform. You will design secure, high-performance systems, lead complex backend initiatives, and mentor engineers while collaborating with Product and DevOps.

You will work on cloud-native microservices, RESTful and gRPC APIs, and GenAI integration using RAG workflows with Azure, Terraform, and container orchestration.

Responsibilities

• Architect and develop high-performance backend services for Core42 platform.
• Lead design and implementation of cloud-native microservices and APIs.
• Ensure scalability, performance, and security across distributed systems.
• Implement data modeling for SQL/NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis).
• Lead GenAI/LLM integration, including RAG workflows and vector databases.
• Own reliability, observability, and Day 2 operations incl. circuit breakers and monitoring.
• Collaborate with DevOps for IaC (Terraform/Bicep) and CI/CD pipelines.
• Enforce security best practices: OAuth2/OIDC, encryption in transit/rest.
• Provide technical leadership and mentoring to engineers.

The opportunity

The Senior Software Engineer (Backend),will play a critical role in architecting, scaling, and maintaining backend services that power Core42’s platform. This role requires deep technical expertise, ownership mindset, and the ability to lead complex backend initiatives while mentoring other engineers. You will design high-performance, secure, and reliable systems that support mission-critical business operations.

Your key responsibilities

• Cloud-Native Architecture & API Design: Architect and develop high-performance, scalable microservices and RESTful/gRPC APIs using Python (FastAPI/Flask). Design services specifically for cloud-native deployment on Azure.
• System Scalability & Performance: Optimize backend performance through effective concurrency management (AsyncIO), caching strategies, and efficient resource utilization. Identify and resolve bottlenecks in distributed systems.
• Advanced Data Modeling: Design and maintain optimized schemas for SQL (PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB/Redis) databases. Implement robust data consistency and migration patterns across distributed environments.
• GenAI & LLM Integration: Lead the backend implementation of Generative AI capabilities, including RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) workflows, vector database integration, and managing LLM orchestration layers.
• Reliability & Resilience Engineering: Own the "Day 2" operations of services by implementing circuit breakers, rate limiting, and graceful degradation to ensure mission-critical uptime.
• Observability & Proactive Monitoring: Implement comprehensive logging, distributed tracing, and real-time metrics (Prometheus/Grafana/Azure Monitor) to maintain deep visibility into service health and AI model performance.
• Cloud Infrastructure & IaC Collaboration: Partner with DevOps to define Infrastructure as Code (Terraform/Bicep) and ensure backend services are seamlessly integrated into automated CI/CD pipelines for zero-downtime deployments.
• Security-First Development: Enforce backend security best practices, including OAuth2/OIDC implementation, encryption of data at rest and in transit, and secure API gateway management.
• Technical Leadership & Mentorship: Drive engineering excellence by leading design reviews, defining coding standards, and mentoring mid-level engineers to foster a culture of technical growth.
• Cross-Functional Strategy: Collaborate with Product, and DevOps teams to translate complex business requirements into scalable, production-ready backend architectures.

What we’re looking for

(a) Required skills / qualifications

• Masters’s or bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field.
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
• 7+ years of hands-on backend development experience.
• Strong proficiency in Python with experience using FastAPI, Flask, and other backend frameworks.
• Expertise in designing RESTful APIs, microservices, and distributed backend architectures.
• Strong knowledge of SQL and NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis).
• Hands-on experience with Azure cloud services and cloud-native application development.
• Deep understanding of scalability, caching, concurrency, and backend performance optimization.
• Experience with Docker, CI/CD pipelines, and containerized deployments.
• Experience designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems
• Strong ability to influence engineering direction and drive best practices.
• Experience with message queues and event-driven architecture (Event Hub, Kafka, RabbitMQ).
• Knowledge of containerization, orchestration (Kubernetes), and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools used in modern DevOps.

• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Proven experience in providing technical leadership and mentoring junior developers.
• Certification in Azure cloud services, AI application development
• Familiarity with hybrid cloud environments and multi-cloud strategies (Azure + AWS/GCP)
• Good to have: Frontend development experience using React, React Native, TypeScript, JavaScript (ES6+), HTML5, and CSS3.
