Roles and responsibilities

Qualifications

  • Fresh graduate with a Mechanical Engineering degree
  • Excellent command of the English language (both written and verbal)
  • Well adept in utilizing MS Office
  • Good communication, reporting and presentation skills
  • Project Planning: Managing piping design projects from concept to completion, including preparing schedules, budgets, and resource plans.
  • Collaboration: Coordinating with other engineers (structural, mechanical, electrical) to ensure that the piping design integrates properly with the overall system and facility design.
  • Documentation: Keeping accurate records of design changes, project specifications, and compliance with standards.
  • Risk Management & Safety: Understanding the risks involved in designing piping systems, particularly in high-pressure, high-temperature, or hazardous environments. Ensuring that the design incorporates safety features like pressure relief valves, expansion joints, and shutdown systems to prevent accidents.
  • Communication Skills: Working closely with other departments, clients, and contractors to ensure clear communication and smooth project execution. Preparing and presenting reports, specifications, and other documents to stakeholders, regulators, or clients.
Desired candidate profile

1. Piping Design & Layout:

  • Designing Piping Systems: Experience in designing and laying out piping systems for a variety of applications (e.g., process piping, HVAC, water supply, wastewater systems). This includes selecting appropriate materials, specifying dimensions, and determining pipe routing.
  • 3D Modeling & CAD Software: Proficiency with design and modeling software such as AutoCAD, AutoCAD Plant 3D, and PDMS (Plant Design Management System) to create detailed piping layouts and 3D models.
  • Isometric Drawings: Creating isometric drawings for piping systems, detailing pipe sizes, material specifications, and routing.

2. Pipe Stress Analysis:

  • Stress & Strain Calculations: Ability to conduct stress analysis to ensure the piping system can withstand operational pressures, temperatures, and mechanical stresses. Familiarity with software such as CAESAR II or AutoPIPE for performing stress analysis.
  • Thermal Expansion & Flexibility: Knowledge of how temperature changes and thermal expansion affect pipe design and selection of supports, hangers, and insulation.

3. Material Selection & Specification:

  • Choosing Materials: Expertise in selecting appropriate materials (e.g., carbon steel, stainless steel, alloys, plastics) based on factors like pressure, temperature, corrosion resistance, and cost.
  • Material Standards & Codes: Familiarity with industry standards and codes (e.g., ASME B31.3, ASME B31.1, API 650, ASTM, ASME, and ANSI) to specify the correct materials and ensure compliance with safety and performance standards.

4. Piping Supports, Hangers & Bracing:

  • Knowledge of the design and selection of piping supports, hangers, brackets, and braces to ensure the integrity of the piping system under different load conditions.
  • Ability to calculate and design the proper spacing and configuration of supports to prevent sagging, vibrations, or mechanical failure.

5. Piping Stress & Flexibility Analysis:

  • Assessing the flexibility of piping systems and understanding how they will behave under pressure, temperature, and external loads.
  • Determining the need for expansion joints, flexible hoses, and other components to absorb thermal expansion and movement.

6. Code Compliance & Standards:

  • Deep understanding of piping design codes and standards, including ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) codes, ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials), and API (American Petroleum Institute) standards.
  • Ensuring that the design and construction of piping systems adhere to local, national, and international safety and regulatory requirements.

7. Fluid Flow Analysis & Pressure Drop Calculations:

  • Performing calculations to determine fluid flow rates, pressure drops, and fluid velocities within piping systems.
  • Understanding how to size pipes to ensure efficient flow, minimize pressure losses, and prevent issues like cavitation or erosion.
