Job summary

Technology Innovation Institute (TII) in Abu Dhabi seeks a Senior Micro-Jet Mechanical Engineer to lead design, analysis, manufacturing and testing of advanced micro-jet engine hardware. You will own mechanical work packages through the lifecycle, coordinating with aerodynamics, combustion, controls, materials, manufacturing and testing teams.

The role requires strong CAD/FEA skills, deep knowledge of gas-turbine architecture, rotor dynamics and GD&T, and prior engine/build experience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • 7–12 years of relevant engineering experience with hardware ownership from design through testing.
  • Proficient with 3D CAD and FEA tools (NX/CATIA/Creo/SolidWorks; Ansys/Nastran/Abaqus).

Responsibilities

  • Lead the mechanical design and technical development of micro-jet engine components and assemblies.
  • Develop and integrate 3D CAD models for compressor and turbine hardware, rotors and stators, shafts, bearings, housings, casings, seals, flanges, nozzles and related structures.
  • Perform structural, thermal and rotating-machinery analyses, including static/rotating loads, fatigue, vibration, buckling, thermal loads and thermo-mechanical behaviour.
  • Conduct FEA and assess stresses, thermal growth, clearances, critical speeds and high-temperature material behaviour.
  • Produce and review engineering drawings, GD&T, tolerance stack-ups, fits, materials, coatings, heat treatments and inspection requirements.
  • Support manufacturing, assembly, balancing, commissioning and testing activities.
  • Investigate mechanical/structural issues identified during build and testing (vibration, leakage, clearances, bearing/joint anomalies).
  • Correlate analytical/FEA results with test data and support design improvements.
  • Coordinate with suppliers on specs, drawings reviews, deviations, non-conformances and acceptance requirements.
  • Prepare and present technical evidence during design/ readiness reviews (PDR/CDR/TRR).
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers.

Job description

Technology Innovation Institute (TII) is a publicly funded research institute, based in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It is home to a diverse community of leading scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and researchers from across the globe, transforming problems and roadblocks into pioneering research and technology prototypes that help move society ahead.

Role Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Micro-Jet Mechanical Engineer to support the design, development, analysis, manufacture and testing of advanced micro-jet engine hardware.

The successful candidate will take technical ownership of assigned mechanical work packages throughout the engineering lifecycle, from requirements definition and concept development through detailed design, manufacturing, engine assembly, testing and design maturation. The role requires close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams across aerodynamics, combustion, controls, materials, manufacturing and testing.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the mechanical design and technical development of micro-jet engine components and assemblies.
  • Develop and integrate 3D CAD models for compressor and turbine hardware, rotors and stators, shafts, bearings, housings, casings, seals, flanges, nozzles and associated structures.
  • Perform structural, thermal and rotating-machinery analyses, including static and rotating loads, fatigue, vibration, buckling, thermal loads and thermo-mechanical behaviour.
  • Conduct FEA and assess stresses, thermal growth, clearances, critical speeds and high-temperature material behaviour.
  • Produce and review engineering drawings, GD&T, tolerance stack-ups, fits, materials, coatings, heat treatments and inspection requirements.
  • Support manufacturing, assembly, balancing, commissioning and testing activities.
  • Investigate mechanical and structural issues identified during build and testing, including vibration, leakage, clearances, thermal behaviour and bearing or joint-related anomalies.
  • Correlate analytical and FEA results with component, rig and engine-test data and support design improvements based on findings.
  • Coordinate with suppliers on technical specifications, manufacturing plans, drawing reviews, deviations, non-conformances and acceptance requirements.
  • Prepare and present technical evidence during design and readiness reviews, including PDR, CDR and TRR.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Typically 7–12 years of relevant engineering experience, with demonstrated ownership of hardware through design, manufacture, assembly, testing and maturation.
  • Advanced proficiency in 3D CAD and engineering drawing development using Siemens NX, CATIA, Creo, SolidWorks or equivalent.
  • Strong practical FEA experience using Ansys Mechanical, Abaqus, Nastran or equivalent.
  • Strong knowledge of solid mechanics, structural dynamics, heat transfer, fatigue, rotating-component stresses and temperature-dependent material behaviour.
  • Practical understanding of gas-turbine mechanical architecture and rotating machinery, including shafts, bearings, compressor/turbine interfaces, casings, seals and running clearances.
  • Working knowledge of rotor dynamics, vibration, balancing and critical-speed considerations.
  • Strong knowledge of GD&T, ISO GPS or ASME Y14.5, tolerance analysis and aerospace manufacturing processes.
  • Experience supporting engine or rotating-machinery builds, testing, troubleshooting and supplier coordination.
  • Strong technical communication, engineering judgement and ability to operate independently within a multidisciplinary engineering environment.
