Overview
Senior Design Engineer role focusing on subsystem design, system integration, and leadership of design activities within a multidisciplinary engineering environment.
Responsibilities
- Support and be compliant with the Company Management System (Quality, Organizational Safety & Health, Environment & Sustainability, Information Security, Flight Safety, Code of Conduct) and company policies, procedures, and instructions.
- Follow organizational safety and health rules and work in a safe manner.
- Attend design reviews internally and externally, representing CLS Automotive technologies with the authority to make sound technical decisions.
- Collaborate with the Procurement, Test and analysis, and Production departments in completing the design process.
- Compile and finalize design concept layouts based on design initiative and inputs from the design team (Design engineers and Chief Designer).
- Discuss existing or potential engineering products and projects with customers, engineers, and others.
- Coordinate with the Chief designer and Engineering director to make swift and accurate decisions.
- Create and update ICDs and DFMEAs.
- Ensure implementation of correct drawing standards and sign-off on drawings, securing full data integrity during the release process.
- Ensure project activities are executed according to set time, budget, and targets.
- Ensure suppliers confirm requirements as set out in project specifications.
- Estimate material, labour, or construction costs for budget preparation.
- Incorporate inputs from the Procurement, Test and analysis, and Production departments during the design process.
- Lead the design on the subsystem level and act as system integrator for the specific sub-system.
- Maintain the technical integrity of allocated designs during development, including system-level integration.
- Manage processes across the acquisition phase.
- Perform concept designs, calculations, and layouts; evaluate finite element simulation results.
- Prepare detailed layouts and manufacturing drawings of components and assemblies; prepare solid models and ensure file structure guidelines and design standards are followed.
- Prepare specifications for purchases of equipment and materials.
- Provide engineering assistance during building and testing of prototypes (closed-loop feedback).
- Supervise or train project team members.
- Support the ILS team by providing information on the sub-system level.
- Support open information flow during prototyping and manufacturing.
- Support the Procurement team with supplier evaluation and selection during the procurement / design cycle.
- Support the Production team by capturing redlines and raising Engineering design change requests where necessary.
- Track development process per quality system procedures; ensure relevant activities and reviews are completed to reduce design risk.
- Verify that correct drawing standards are always employed.
- Write reports and compile data regarding existing and potential engineering projects and studies.
Qualifications
Education :
- Tertiary education in a related field.
- Diploma or Certification in a mechanical engineering field.
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
And / or
- An MSc, or PhD in a related field (preferred).
Experience :
- Engineering experience: 6+ years.
- Experience in leading a sub-system on a design level.
- Experience in testing and prototyping.
- Experience working on CAD and PLM software such as NX and Teamcenter.
- Knowledge of 3D modelling, engineering calculation, simulation, off-road mobility, vehicle tests, mechanical assembly, and vehicle systems.
- Must be an accomplished Senior Design Engineer or equivalent.
Skills :
- Proven ability to ensure products are manufacturable, fit for purpose, and adhere to design for manufacturing and assembly principles.
- Excellent coaching, communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills with clients, team members, and suppliers worldwide.
- Experience with CAD and PLM software such as NX and Teamcenter; knowledge of 3D modelling, engineering calculation, simulation, vehicle systems.
- Problem solving / analysis; solid team building and leadership skills; work systematically.
Certifications :
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering (required).
- An MSc or PhD in the engineering field is preferred.
