Roles & Responsibilities

Taaleem is seeking a dedicated and experienced SENCO to join one of its schools and champion the learning and wellbeing of all pupils with additional needs.

Job Purpose: The SEN Coordinator has the overall responsibility for ensuring appropriate quality provision, attainment, and progress for students identified as having Special Educational Needs (SEN), English as an Additional Language (EAL), and Gifted and Talented (G&T). The SEN Coordinator is also responsible for communicating and engaging with parents and external student support services to ensure all students have access to appropriate interventions and learning strategies to meet their individual needs.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Create and maintain a register of all students with specific educational needs requiring support.
  • Create, monitor, and review the effectiveness of support service policies and procedures.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operation of the school’s support services policies.
  • Manage budgets effectively and prioritize resources.
  • Track the progress and development of targeted students in conjunction with teachers and team leaders.
  • Collect data and analyze student results.
  • Support the identification of student needs, including conducting individual assessments as needed.
  • Support and monitor the development and review of Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Design and coordinate interventions and ensure their effective implementation.
  • Identify barriers to learning and share strategies with staff.
  • Mentor and induct new staff within the team.
  • Manage the performance of Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) in the school.
  • Report to and meet with teachers and parents as appropriate.
  • Provide training and coaching to classroom Learning Assistants to support student learning.
  • Maintain communication with all relevant parties.
  • Create and maintain a register of students with exam/assessment accommodations.
  • Ensure accommodations are in place for assessments.
  • Attend parent/teacher events and develop strategies to support targeted students.
  • Assist with enrollment and admissions procedures as needed.
  • Conduct and report on student observations and lesson observations.
  • Implement screening and diagnostic procedures to identify learning needs.
  • Manage staff performance with a focus on differentiation.
  • Lead weekly meetings with Student Support staff.
  • Ensure regular meetings with Heads of Sections and parents.
  • Prepare reports for various requirements and meetings.
  • Participate in SLT meetings to provide updates and guidance.
  • Develop relationships with external agencies, e.g., child psychology services.
  • Share critical actions for students and provide professional development opportunities.

Person Specifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree, teaching certification, and additional leadership/management training preferred.
  • Experience: At least 2 years in senior or middle leadership roles in similar settings.
  • Competencies: Knowledge of accreditation frameworks, excellent communication, leadership, decision-making, solutions focus, child protection, and safety, team development, and expertise in SEN, EAL, and G&T provision.
  • Attributes: Collaborative, inspirational, empathetic, integrous, strategic, emotionally intelligent, interculturally aware, flexible, multilingual capable.
