Role Context
The Rig Superintendent provides senior field leadership throughout development drilling campaigns, ensuring crews, equipment, contractors, logistics, and maintenance resources remain aligned with operational objectives. The position directly influences drilling productivity, well delivery, HSE performance, equipment availability, and operating cost. Effective leadership is particularly important during rig moves, equipment problems, well-control situations, and other activities where timely decisions can prevent downtime and operational risk.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct daily development drilling activities and maintain safe, efficient operation of the rig, worksite, equipment, and supporting facilities.
- Lead rig personnel, establish work priorities, coordinate crew activities, and maintain disciplined execution across operations.
- Plan and supervise rig erection, dismantling, mobilization, demobilization, and movement between drilling locations.
- Track drilling progress against approved well programs, schedules, performance objectives, and operational targets.
- Maintain close oversight of well-control practices and ensure established drilling procedures are consistently followed.
- Monitor rig systems and equipment condition to identify reliability issues before they disrupt drilling activities.
- Coordinate preventive maintenance schedules, equipment servicing, inspections, and corrective maintenance requirements.
- Arrange the manpower, drilling tools, fuel, water, consumables, and field resources needed to maintain operational continuity.
- Review drilling and wellbore results and investigate performance deviations or emerging operational concerns.
- Work closely with Operations Managers, other Superintendents, clients, contractors, service companies, and field personnel.
- Investigate accidents, injuries, equipment failures, operational incidents, and other reportable events.
- Prepare clear reports covering drilling progress, downtime, equipment requirements, maintenance concerns, and operational challenges.
- Identify opportunities to reduce non-productive time, improve rig efficiency, optimize resources, and control operating costs.
- Enforce company HSE requirements, operational procedures, worksite controls, and applicable regulatory standards.
- Support training, competency development, performance improvement, and effective workforce deployment.
- Maintain appropriate controls to protect personnel, drilling equipment, materials, and company assets.
- Ensure relevant operations comply with applicable Saudi drilling, HSE, logistics, immigration, and employee-relations requirements.
Ideal Profile
- Proven supervisory-level experience in drilling rig operations.
- Strong hands-on background in land-based development drilling.
- Demonstrated experience supervising drilling crews and coordinating demanding field operations.
- Comprehensive understanding of drilling equipment, rig systems, well control, and operational procedures.
- Practical experience managing rig maintenance and preventive maintenance schedules.
- Strong HSE knowledge with a consistent commitment to safe drilling practices.
- Experience coordinating rig erection, dismantling, mobilization, demobilization, and rig moves.
- Ability to evaluate drilling performance and make timely operational decisions.
- Strong incident investigation, troubleshooting, and critical-thinking capability.
- Effective at coordinating clients, contractors, service providers, and internal operational teams.
- Comfortable working in remote and challenging drilling environments.
