Researcher (Consultant)

JOB SCOPE
Hedayah is the premier international organization dedicated to using its expertise and experiences to counter extremism and violent extremism in all of its forms and manifestations. Established in 2012, Hedayah was created in response to the growing desire from members of the Global Counter-Terrorism Forum (GCTF) and the wider international community for the establishment of an independent, neutral and multilateral center devoted to dialogue, communications, capacity building programs, research and analysis. As a leader within the counter extremism community, we work to enhance understanding and share good practices to effectively build the capacity of actors across the globe to promote tolerance, stability, and security.
Hedayah's Programs department and Research & Analysis department are currently collaborating on formative research activities for a major project on countering extremism and violent extremism through strategic communications in Tunisia. This role will be dedicated to undertaking and supporting research activities on this project.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
This is a project-related role, contributing to a major project on countering extremism and violent extremism through strategic communications in Tunisia. The Researcher will be responsible for the following specific duties at the direction of the Program Manager:

1. Conduct desk research/literature review
2. Support and conduct primary research (i.e. interviews)
3. Conduct qualitative analysis of primary research (i.e. coding using qualitative analysis software)

1. Report directly to the Program Managers as to the proper execution of their assigned activities
2. Support specific project-related activities when required, such as updating work-plans or other project-related administrative tasks, under the supervision of the Program Managers and in coordination with the wider team.
3. Work with the research and analysis team to implement the project, under the supervision of the Program Managers and in coordination with the wider team.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Education:

1. An advanced level university degree (Masters Degree or academic equivalent) in International Relations, Political Science, Social Sciences, Terrorism Studies or related field. (Please note that current graduate students may also be considered.)

1. Previous relevant experience in conducting primary (qualitative) and/or secondary research activities
2. Knowledge of and/or relevant experience related to education and countering extremism and violent extremism, gender in particular, is strongly desirable.
3. Knowledge of issues related to countering violent extremism is desirable.
4. Ability in managing logistics related to research activities
5. Experience of working in an international setting is desirable
6. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders including governments, policy makers, community leaders and actors, NGOs, practitioners and experts is desirable
7. Ability to work independently as well as within a team is required
8. Ability to manage internal and external relationships with diplomacy, cultural sensitivity and discretion is required
9. Ability to meet deadlines on assigned activities in a fast-paced environment is required
