The laboratory of Professor Raed Hashaikeh in the Water Research Center, New York University Abu Dhabi, invites applications for a Research Associate position in the field of advanced membrane technology, with a targeted start date of August 2025.

The successful applicant will lead a project focused on the development of advanced functional membranes for desalination, both at the bench scale and pilot scale. This interdisciplinary effort will involve collaboration with a team of researchers and graduate students with expertise spanning materials science, chemistry, mechanical and chemical engineering. The researcher will have access to state-of-the-art facilities housed within NYUAD’s Water Research Center.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and characterize novel membrane materials for applications including reverse osmosis, forward osmosis, nanofiltration, and membrane distillation.
  • Design and implement laboratory experiments and/or field studies to investigate desalination processes and post-treatment technologies.
  • Collaborate with team members from various scientific backgrounds to address technical challenges in membrane science.
  • Perform advanced materials analyses using tools such as XRD, TGA, DSC, DMA, BET, porometer, and others.
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical reports, patent applications, and scholarly publications.
  • Present findings at group meetings, seminars, and international conferences.
  • Engage in limited teaching or mentoring activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field. The PhD must have been awarded on or before 2022.
  • Demonstrated experience in membrane fabrication and characterization.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • At least one first-author publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Peer-reviewed publications relevant to desalination and membrane technologies.
  • Experience with analytical and/or organic chemistry.
  • Familiarity with membrane performance testing and pilot-scale operations.

The position is a full-time, fixed-term contract for two years, renewable depending on performance and funding availability.
