Job description

Job Description

The Research Assistant Technician supports the research technical team in daily operations of the laboratories.

Main responsibilities include:

  • Daily routine maintenance operations in wet and dry laboratories;
  • Daily routine husbandry of research specimens;
  • Assisting hatchery team with the maintenance of plankton when needed;
  • Routine maintenance and cleaning of skids;
  • Assist in the preparation of the equipment set for field work
  • Assist in the cleaning and storage of equipment in appropriate locations

The job scope includes:

  • Supports the production of live feeds: phyto- and zooplankton
  • Executes the daily tasks required for the aquaculture facility – system maintenance and husbandry - as directed by lead and senior researchers
  • Follows the standard operating procedures (SOPs) and practices which promote high-quality operation of the facility
  • Reports to research technicians and researchers about any issues in the systems or research specimen
  • Assists in management of systems and equipment used in laboratories
  • Assists in running and reporting of trials and performing of experimental procedures as directed by the senior research technicians or senior researchers
  • Supports the rescue and research field operations when required
  • Collaborates with SeaWorld Abu Dhabi Zoological and Education teams as required
  • Contributes to the overall success of the YSWRR projects by performing all other duties as assigned

To be considered for the role, you will need to have:

Job Essentials:

  • Bachelor’s degree in life, bioengineering or environmental sciences
  • Internship or first experience in a facility with aquarium systems or aquaculture tanks
  • Excellent English verbal and written communication skills
  • Interest in marine sciences
  • Ability to follow health and safety procedures during operations
  • Basic computer skills are necessary for email communication, maintaining logs and completing other administrative duties
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and teamwork abilities
  • Demonstrated commitment to company values and safety

Job Desirable:

  • Scuba diving Certification (eq. PADI Rescue Level)
  • Experience in a research facility
  • Practical knowledge of aquaculture systems, pumps, filtration systems, etc.
  • Arabic verbal and written communication skills
  • Good skills in use of standard machine shop tools, including welding, carpentry, fabrication
  • Evidence of ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary research teams
  • Evidence of multicultural skills in the workplace is an advantage
